Jiang Kechu was a bit puzzled by Wan Chuer’s sudden change of expression, thinking to himself that girls indeed have complicated minds. He bowed his head and picked up some noodles with his chopsticks. The noodles were chewy and the sauce flavorful, and he nodded in satisfaction.
Bai Zhixi saw that Jiang Kechu was satisfied, and she relaxed, smiling as she said, "I made this pickled cucumber myself, it’s pretty good. Mr. Jiang, give it a taste."
"No need to be so polite," Jiang Kechu said softly but obediently picked up a piece of the pickle and put it in his mouth. The sourness combined with the rich soy flavor made it a good side dish.
He didn’t hesitate to praise, "This pickled vegetable is indeed quite good."
Seeing Jiang Kechu eating her pickles, Wan Chuer should have been angry, but surprisingly she felt a tinge of happiness. She didn’t quite understand her complicated feelings, so she sped up eating and finished her meal quickly. She then put down her chopsticks and said to Bai Zhixi:
"Mom, I’m going to school now."
After saying this, she ignored Jiang Kechu, went back to her room to grab her backpack, and when passing the living room, she said as if driven by a ghostly impulse, "Goodbye, Uncle Jiang," and then walked out.
Upon hearing Wan Chuer call him "Uncle Jiang," Jiang Kechu couldn’t help but twitch his lips, and could only bow his head and take a big gulp of noodles.
Behind him came Bai Zhixi’s apologetic voice, "This child is a bit willful today, perhaps in a bad mood. Mr. Jiang, don’t mind, Chuer is not against you."
