Reincarnated as a failed hero?! Watch me Defy Fate!

Chapter 28: Coming Home

It’s been a week since the incident. Two days ago, I woke up from my long slumber. My body bore the marks of countless injuries, but thanks to the system and my increased level, I’ve been recovering much faster than before. Even so, I can’t shake off the heaviness in my heart.

My teammates have also made full recoveries, which is a relief. Lyra and Freya, who were treated here alongside me, stayed at the mansion during their recovery. To my surprise, they seemed to be holding up well. Maybe the harrowing battle gave them invaluable experience, strengthening their resolve. I’m proud of them, though I regret having put them through such danger.

Alan, however, hasn’t been as fortunate. He lost one of his arms in the battle. It’ll take time for him to adjust, both physically and mentally. I suggested he consider retiring as a Blackmore knight, but he refused outright. His determination was unshakable. "I’ll grow stronger, even like this," he said, his eyes burning with conviction. Alan doesn’t want the sacrifices of our comrades to be in vain. I believe in him—he’ll rise above this, stronger than ever before.

Vivin and Elan have returned to their duties as maids, their smiles hiding the pain of losing Rosan. I understand their grief all too well. It feels like an essential part of your life has been torn away, leaving a void that refuses to be filled.

Rosan’s presence still lingers in my thoughts. I sometimes imagine her stepping into my room, her calm demeanor and firm guidance steadying my day. But she’s gone now, and Elan has stepped up to fill her role. Elan is different from Rosan in many ways, but her warmth and care for me are unmistakable. I know she and Vivin will eventually find peace.

After regaining some strength, I started light recovery training with Lyra and Freya. On the morning they were set to return to the central city, I met with them for a final talk.

"Um... Lyra, Freya... I’m sorry for dragging you into such a dangerous situation. I didn’t know things would turn out that way," I said, my voice heavy with guilt.

The two exchanged glances and then shook their heads in unison.

"It’s not your fault, Naoki-sama," Lyra replied softly. "We chose to fight alongside you. Besides..." Her voice trembled for a moment before she straightened up, a determined look in her eyes. "I’m grateful. Because of you, I learned so much from Rosan. She was like a mentor to me. I’ll honor her memory by becoming a great magic knight. I won’t let her down!"

"That’s right, Naoki-dono," Freya added, her voice brimming with conviction. "I’ve learned so much from everyone—Rosan, Elan, Vivin. I’ll grow stronger and achieve Knight Rank A!"

I was taken aback by their newfound determination. It was as if the battle had carved away their doubts, revealing the strength they always carried within. I couldn’t help but smile.
