Chapter 2: Enough
"Why are you so quiet? Did something happen?" Lucas, her twin brother asked.
They were in the car on their way home when he heard her sigh. She was still thinking about Caroline. The words she said and the look in her eyes.
"Have you ever had a chance to talk to Caroline?" She asked.
Lucas frowned. "Caden’s sister? I talked to her once. But she didn’t even say a single word."
"I see. She’s in seventh grade?"
Lucas nodded. "Yeah. She just started her junior year. Why did you suddenly ask about her?"
She sighed. "I saw her earlier and my friends said she had some trouble so I went to the principal’s office to check on her. But she didn’t want to talk to me."
"She’s a troubled child. Uncle Jayden and Aunt Peggy somehow lost touch with her. Caden didn’t even know he has a sister."
She was surprised. "What do you mean Caden didn’t know?"
Lucas was taken aback. The look on his face showed that he said something he shouldn’t have.
"Alira, there are things that are better to be kept a secret. I’m sorry, but I can’t tell you more." Lucas said.
She chuckled. "A secret? Like what they did to me? To Caden? It’s been twelve years, Lucas. I followed every order they asked me to do. I have been keeping the events from twelve years ago a secret. Isn’t that enough? I’m old enough to understand what was happening."
