Chapter 108: The One Who Can't Be Honest
TL: Aniea
A few more days passed after the joint rehearsal ended. The practice progressed smoothly, and now only the final rehearsal remained.
However, unlike usual, the stage was quiet. Everyone stood with their lips tightly shut, staring at Kang Woo-ju and Kim Eun-ha standing on stage.
‘It’s finally here!’
‘I want to see it already....’
‘Of course, there's one for me too, right?’
They just didn’t open their mouths. But their eyes were saying more than any chatterbox could ever say.
Pupils trembling with excitement and anticipation. Children unable to endure the nervousness stamped their feet.
Smile-
At this, Kim Eun-ha seemed to think she had kept them waiting long enough, and a gentle smile appeared on her lips.
After that, she turned her gaze to Kang Woo-ju standing beside her, and as if he had easily understood her intentions, he nodded his head.
“Then. We'll reveal it now.”
Ooooh-!!
When Kang Woo-ju opened the large box in front of him, everyone in the audience let out a gasp of admiration.
With the enthusiastic response unlike any before, Kang Woo-ju also raised the corners of his mouth and pulled out one of the items from inside the box.
“First up is the dwarf costume.”
“Waaaah-! It’s me! It’s me!”
Min-ji, who played the role of the first dwarf in the play, shouted hooray and jumped up onto the stage. Her face was full of childlike innocence.
Kang Woo-ju warned her not to jump but welcomed her with a face full of laughter.
“Oppa, hurry! Hurry!”
“Wait a second. I have to show everyone else too.”
“Uunng.”
After calming Min-ji down, Kang Woo-ju carefully removed the wrapping that covered the costume and held it up for everyone to see.
A top and bottom outfit based on red, shoes, a hat, and even a polka dot scarf. A full set covering everything from head to toe was revealed.
Its appearance gave off the impression of ‘fire’ embodied. It even resembled a spirit.
“Wooooow-!!”
“It’s a fairy. A fairy!”
“Hyung! Mine too, hurry-!!”
With costumes that were much more splendid than expected, not only the children but even the nuns and production staff watching from afar were amazed.
“Money really is good, isn’t it?”
“Seriously. I didn’t think the quality would be this high.”
“Wow, look at the fabric... even from a distance, it looks amazing.”
In some ways, their admiration was purer than that of the children. Having been worn down by the world, they couldn’t help but realize how unbelievable the situation unfolding before their eyes was.
“Next is Min-soo.”
“Waaah-!!”
In the meantime, Kang Woo-ju and Kim Eun-ha handed out all the costumes to the children playing the dwarfs.
Then, the boys stripped off the clothes they were wearing on the spot and changed into the costumes.
The girls, hand in hand with the nuns, went off to change clothes together.
The structure of the costumes was very simple, so it didn’t take long for everyone to change. In just five minutes, all seven dwarfs stood on stage.
“Oooh! So cute!”
“This is seriously amazing.”
“Photos! No, get the camera first!”
When the children were gathered together, it was the adults who got more excited. Especially the nuns, who usually remained calm, were the most frantic.
They tried to take pictures of the children with their own phones, but seemingly dissatisfied with the image quality, they started pestering the production staff nearby.
Of course, the production staff had already been filming with cameras as if possessed. So, every moment of the children was captured in high-quality videos and photos.
“You definitely nailed the concept.”
“Couldn’t agree more.”
Kang Woo-ju and Kim Eun-ha, watching the scene, nodded with pleased expressions.
Although it started as <Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs>, in the process of reflecting the children’s diverse creativity, it became hard to find traces of the original.
Thanks to that, the seven dwarfs appearing in the play were significantly different from the traditional image. The result was what was now in front of them.
‘Should we start calling them the seven spirits instead?’
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.
Each one took charge of a different color based on the rainbow. They were also assigned attributes that matched their respective colors.
For example, red was fire, blue was water, green was wood, and so on. Based on their attribute, even their personalities and lines were adjusted.
The setting was that the spirits found the baby princess in the forest maze and raised her as their own child, teaching her various talents.
‘It even fits their personalities well.’
Children also have all sorts of personalities. Some are overly energetic, while others quietly read books in a corner.
If given a role too different from their own personality, the difficulty increases drastically.
That’s why writer Jung Ha-rin, the nuns, and everyone else put their heads together to finalize the current combination.
Perhaps thanks to that, even the shy kids who were initially afraid of the play were now fiddling with their costumes with happy expressions.
“Hohoho. Everyone looks so beautiful.”
“How can you all be this cute?”
“I need to change my profile picture and background wallpaper too!”
“S-Sister! Please hold off until the play is over!”
They already liked the kids, but at this moment, the nuns had completely become fans. Genuine smiles bloomed on their faces as well.
“...I’m jealous.”
“...I should’ve joined the play.”
“...Ji-ah could’ve worn a pretty outfit too.”
In contrast, the children from the choir had subtle expressions. They were happy that the theater team’s costumes looked great, but at the same time, envy was bubbling up.
Of course, Kang Woo-ju wasn’t someone who would miss this. Thinking it was time to move on, he opened another box that was beside him.
“Let’s see. Oh, this one’s for the choir?”
“......!?”
In fact, the contents were labeled on the top of the box, so there was no way Kang Woo-ju didn’t know. But he feigned ignorance with a straight face.
His voice, imbued with a certain power, instantly seized the chaotic atmosphere. Everyone’s attention shifted to him.
Especially the choir kids who had been pouting and grumbling a moment ago now perked up their ears like rabbits.
“Huh? Really!?”
“There’s something for us too!?”
“Oppa, you said it’s for the choir, right?”
The sulky faces vanished without a trace, replaced by pure anticipation.
Kang Woo-ju tried to stall by pretending to organize the clothes, but the children’s intense stares didn’t let him drag it out for long.
“Tada-!”
“......!!!”
When Kang Woo-ju lifted up the outfit, the mouths of the choir kids dropped open. It was much prettier than anything they had imagined.
What he showed first was the boys’ version. With navy pants and a sky-blue dress shirt, the clean-cut fit left an impression.
The butterfly necktie added a touch of style. It looked like a school uniform from a chaebol drama.
“...It’s pretty.”
“Oppa, what about us!?”
“There’s something for us too, right!?”
Thanks to that, the girls were in an uproar. Before getting scolded, Kang Woo-ju quickly signaled Kim Eun-ha for help.
Reading the room well, Kim Eun-ha bent down and swiftly pulled out the girls’ outfits. Cheers erupted immediately.
“Kyaaaa-!!”
“So cute!”
“I want to try it on right now!”
The basic color scheme of the top and bottom matched the boys’ version, but the girls’ costume had a skirt and suspenders, and the ribbon was much cuter.
It was a superb design that satisfied not only the children's tastes but also the adults' eyes, and everyone nodded in approval with content smiles.
And so, the costume distribution ceremony continued one by one, like an award ceremony. Fortunately, not a single person was unhappy.
“...Hyung. Isn’t this a bit too much though?”
“You’re the king. On top of that, you’ll have to wear other accessories like a crown or rings. It'll be much heavier than usual, so be careful.”
“...This is gonna be so damn embarrassing.”
“If you act embarrassed, the audience will feel the same way. But if you shamelessly push through thinking ‘I’m the king’, there’s no outfit cooler than this.”
“Ugh-”
Kim Cheol-su let out a groan as he reluctantly took the outfit. But judging by the faint curl of his lips, he didn’t seem entirely displeased.
“I told you, he’s just not honest.”
Kang Woo-ju shook his head as he looked at Kim Cheol-su’s back. Just then, Kang Han-na suddenly poked her head in beside him.
“Wasn’t it the other way around?”
“Honesty and rudeness are completely different. In that sense, Cheol-su is more of a liar. Even though he looks like that, he’s actually quite soft inside.”
“Hmm. I see.”
“Acting like you don’t know when you do.”
“It’s not like I know everything. It’s not like I’m some prophet. It’s not like I’ve actually mastered mind-reading. And more importantly....”
Kang Han-na lingered, then glanced sideways at Kim Eun-ha, who was busy handing out clothes to the choir members, and opened her mouth again.
“I promised myself I wouldn’t judge people based on appearances anymore. I realized how arrogant it is to think I know someone’s true feelings.”
“You’ve grown quite a bit, huh?”
“Thanks to someone.”
Bashishi-
Kang Han-na smiled radiantly. It was a smile so bright and pure, fitting for her age, that even Kang Woo-ju flinched for a moment.
“Don’t tell me that smile is part of your act too?”
“Hehe. Want to guess?”
She spoke clearly without stuttering and answered his teasing with wit. This was clearly Kang Han-na in ‘Kim Eun-ha mode’, but something about it felt slightly different.
Rather than her original self, it felt more like a mask, a reinvention based on Kim Eun-ha’s extroverted personality.
“Han-na. You need to get changed.”
“...Y-Yes! I’m sorry!”
With just one word from Kim Eun-ha, she reverted to her usual timid self, indicating she hadn’t fully made it her own yet.
Still, if Kang Han-na continued to work hard like now and enough time and effort accumulated, someday she would have a color entirely her own.
“...Just about done.”
As they continued handing out the costumes one by one, everything was eventually sorted out. Finally, Kang Woo-ju grabbed the box containing his own outfit.
Since he was the lead, he needed more costumes than the others, so he received a whole heavy box.
“I’ll go change too.”
“Okay. See you later.”
Kim Eun-ha left first to change, and after watching her back for a moment, Kang Woo-ju slowly turned and headed to the men’s changing room.
There, Seo Jun-woo, who had already changed in the waiting room, greeted him.
“Hey, you’re here.”
“Looks better than I expected.”
“You think so too, huh?”
Seo Jun-woo was wearing a white uniform embroidered with gold. Maybe because of his good looks, he resembled a prince from a noble family in the Middle Ages.
At first glance, it seemed a bit far from the image of the ‘Evil Sorcerer’, but
To entertain the audience, they added a backstory that he was a royal descendant from an ancient empire.
“Even I wasn’t sure until I saw it in person. But with this level of quality, the clothes might be better than what real medieval nobles wore.”
“...Could be.”
Seo Jun-woo meant it half-jokingly, but Kang Woo-ju nodded seriously.
Considering the raw materials and technology used back then, there was a high chance these costumes, created with a generous budget and no limits, were more comfortable and luxurious than the originals.
“Hmm. They’re easy to move in, too. The range of motion is wider than I thought. It shouldn’t be any problem for the action scenes.”
“That’s good to hear.”
“Thanks, Woo-ju.”
“Hm?”
Kang Woo-ju, who was in the middle of changing, turned his head at the sudden thanks. Seo Jun-woo shrugged and added more.
“When else would I get to wear clothes like this in my life? Thanks to you, I get to act like a noble. Spending time with the kids has been more fun than I expected too.”
“You were running away saying it was too hard.”
“...I just couldn’t keep up with their energy.”
“Fair enough.”
Seo Jun-woo shivered as if recalling the torment of being hounded by kids 24/7. Watching that, Kang Woo-ju let out a quiet chuckle.
“But I’m jealous.”
“Of what?”
“It’s not every day you get to see your girlfriend in a dress, right? But you’ve seen her in everything, from medieval style to a wedding dress. You get to see every kind.”
Freeze-
Kang Woo-ju’s hands, which were buttoning his shirt, stopped. Hearing Seo Jun-woo’s words, he suddenly pictured Kim Eun-ha in a dress.
He hadn’t thought much of it before, but now that he was aware, a strange feeling started to stir.
“You imagined it just now, didn’t you?”
“...No.”
“Come on, why are you hiding stuff between us?”
“Don’t act like we’re close.”
“Oof- that one stings a bit.”
Seo Jun-woo clutched his chest dramatically, but Kang Woo-ju ignored him and silently continued buttoning up.
“Woo-ju.”
“What now.”
“You buttoned it wrong.”
“.......”
Kikik-
Seo Jun-woo didn’t even bother hiding his laughter. Kang Woo-ju, without a word, corrected his buttons.
He tried hard to keep a poker face, but his cluelessly reddening earlobes gave everything away.
