Supreme Hunter of Beautiful Souls

Chapter 510: And lose the charm?

"Right."

The word came out simply, without any weight, as if Carter had just informed them that there was a bend ahead on the path, and not a territory teeming with predators ready to react to the slightest provocation. Kael maintained the same walking pace, hands in his pockets, relaxed posture, his gaze wandering between the surroundings and the backs of the group ahead, completely oblivious to the growing tension that was beginning to build around them.

"I kill if you get in my way."

He finished, in the same neutral tone, as if he were merely clarifying a basic rule of coexistence.

The silence that followed was not just uncomfortable—it was heavy. Not because the phrase was unexpected, but because it was uttered with an absurd naturalness too unignored. No trace of provocation, no attempt at intimidation... just a fact.

The vampires slowed down almost imperceptibly.

Not enough to stop.

But enough for the impact of those words to reach them.

One of them, further back, exchanged a quick glance with another, as if to confirm he’d heard correctly. Carter himself didn’t respond immediately, but the slight tension that crossed his posture betrayed that he had completely recalculated the situation.

Kael wasn’t trying to seem dangerous.

He simply was.

Before the silence became even denser, Exelia let out a small, light sigh, almost like someone tired of having to state the obvious. She took a step forward, closing the distance between herself and Kael, but without overtaking him, remaining slightly behind, like someone who knew exactly her place—and its weight.

"It’s not that complicated."

Her voice was soft, polite... almost too gentle for the context.

She tilted her head slightly, a small smile appearing on her lips—beautiful, delicate... and completely out of place in that situation.

"We’re quite tolerant."

A brief pause.

The smile widened.

"Just don’t mess with us."

There was something about the way she spoke that made the air around them feel colder. It wasn’t the content of the sentence—it was the tone. The naturalness with which it was said, combined with the slight glint in her eyes, created a feeling too uncomfortable to ignore.

There was no explicit threat.

But there was certainty.

And that... was worse.

One of the younger vampires swallowed hard, reflexively looking away, as if he had been directly struck by something he couldn’t name. Another clenched his fists slightly, not in hostility, but in a basic instinct of self-preservation.

Carter remained silent for a few seconds.

Then he nodded.

Slowly.

"Understood."

The answer came more restrained than before, less formal, more... careful. He didn’t argue. He didn’t question. He simply accepted.

And then he moved again.

The group resumed their advance, but now there was a clear difference. Before, they had guided. Now... they led cautiously. As if they were taking something unpredictable directly into the heart of their own territory.

The environment began to change more noticeably as they advanced. The trees became more spaced out, but also more distorted, their trunks twisted into almost unnatural shapes, as if they had grown under the constant influence of something... wrong. The ground, once uneven, now seemed more marked—signs of frequent passage, more defined trails, footprints that crisscrossed in patterns indicating constant movement.

Life.

But not the ordinary kind.

Kael realized this immediately.

His eyes moved slowly around, absorbing every detail with silent precision, while his expression remained the same—calm, almost bored. But there was something different now. A sharper focus.

They were truly entering.

The air also changed.

If it had been heavy before, now it seemed denser, almost oppressive, as if it carried a constant, invisible presence, impossible to ignore. It wasn’t just magic. It was... dominion.

"So this is the real territory..." Kael murmured, more to himself than to anyone else, as he watched the perpetually dark sky above them.

Exelia didn’t answer, but her eyes were also more attentive now, scanning the surroundings with a studied calm, registering everything.

Further ahead, structures began to appear.

They weren’t cities yet—but they were clear signs of occupation. Small dark stone buildings, partially hidden among the trees, some abandoned, others with recent signs of use. Secondary paths connected to the main trail, creating an almost invisible network of routes that spread throughout the region.

And then... they began to appear.

First one.

Then two.

And then several.

Vampires.

Watching.

They weren’t completely hidden, but they weren’t getting closer either. They remained on the sides, among the trees, on high rocks, in strategic positions that gave them a clear view of the advancing group. Their eyes gleamed in the constant twilight, attentive, curious... and suspicious.

They saw Carter.

They recognized the group.

But their gazes... weren’t focused on them.

They were on Kael.

And on Exelia.

Kael realized this immediately.

And did absolutely nothing about it.

He kept walking, as if it were completely irrelevant, ignoring the stares, ignoring the growing tension, ignoring the fact that he was being watched by predators in his own territory.

One of the nearest vampires moved slightly, as if considering getting closer.

Kael turned his gaze.

Just that.

And it was enough.

The vampire stopped.

Immediately.

Without confrontation. No words exchanged. No explicit display of power. Just... instinct.

Exelia noticed.

And smiled slightly, almost amused.

"They’re quite polite when they want to be."

She murmured, in a tone low enough for only Kael to hear.

Kael let out a small "hm" in response, without taking his eyes off the path ahead.

Carter, noticing the increased presence around him, slowed his pace slightly once more, as if trying to maintain control of the situation as much as possible.

"We’re inside."

He said, this time glancing briefly over his shoulder.

"This... is the Vampire Realm."

There was no grandeur in the presentation.

Because it didn’t need to be.

The environment itself spoke for itself.

Kael looked around once more.

Without haste.

Without exaggerated reaction.

And then he let out a small sigh.

"I expected something more dramatic." The response was so out of place in the moment that one of the vampires beside Carter even blinked, clearly unsure how to react.

Exelia, on the other hand... chuckled softly.

Kael didn’t react to her laughter, at least not overtly. But the corner of his mouth moved almost imperceptibly, as if that reaction confirmed something he already expected. He continued walking without altering his pace, without showing any urgency, as if he were traversing an ordinary path—and not the heart of a territory that, at that moment, was clearly attentive to his presence.

As they advanced deeper, the number of observers increased. Not chaotically or disorganizedly, but steadily. Each new area revealed more figures in the shadows, more eyes reflecting the faint light of that artificial sky, more presences that didn’t completely hide... but also didn’t expose themselves too much. It was a strange balance, almost as if everyone were waiting for an order that hadn’t yet been given.

Kael realized this.

Not just their presence.

But the pattern.

They weren’t reacting on instinct.

They were... restrained.

This made his eyes narrow slightly, not out of distrust, but out of interest. He brought his hand to his chin for a brief moment, thoughtful, as if organizing that information along with everything else he had observed since they crossed the border.

"They’re holding back too much..." he murmured, more to himself than to anyone else, though he knew Exelia would hear.

Exelia didn’t answer immediately, but her eyes moved slowly along the sides of the path, analyzing the vampires that emerged from among the trees, on higher structures, even on the rooftops of some older buildings that were beginning to appear more frequently as they advanced.

"It’s not pure fear," she replied after a few seconds, her voice low and controlled. "It’s... discipline."

Kael made a small sound through his nose, almost an acknowledgment.

"Or a direct order."

He finished, without looking at her.

Carter heard.

And, this time, he couldn’t completely hide his reaction. His shoulders stiffened for a moment before he regained control, maintaining his pace. But the slight delay was enough to betray that his observation had hit something real.

Kael noticed.

Of course he noticed.

But he didn’t comment.

Not yet.

The path began to widen further ahead, revealing a more expansive area where the trees receded enough to give way to a more defined road, made of dark, uneven stone, clearly ancient but still functional. This was no longer a secondary trail. It was a main route.

And that changed everything.

The presence around them ceased to be merely passive observation. Some vampires were now closer, positioned along the road, not exactly blocking the path, but also no longer hiding their existence. There was a clear difference between those who had been in the shadows before... and those who were there now.

These were stronger.

More confident.

And, above all... more attentive.

One of them, leaning against a partially destroyed stone structure, followed the group with his gaze from the moment they appeared on the road until they passed him. His eyes fixed on Kael for longer than necessary, analyzing, measuring... as if trying to understand exactly what was before him.

Kael turned his face slightly.

He looked back.

And kept walking.

Without saying anything.

Without stopping.

But something in that brief contact made the vampire straighten up a little more, moving away from the wall, as if he had been pulled back to reality by an instinct he couldn’t ignore.

Exelia noticed this at a glance, her smile returning for a brief moment, more subtle this time, but still present.

"You really don’t help..." she murmured, with a slight touch of dry humor.

Kael shrugged.

"I never said I did."

The answer came automatically.

Natural.

And, in a way... too true.

Carter finally slowed down once more, this time more noticeably, raising his hand slightly to signal to the group to slow down. He glanced around quickly, assessing the surroundings, the vampires positioned along the road, the distance to the next point... and then let out a small, restrained sigh.

"From here on..." he began, his voice lower now, as if trying to keep the conversation between them, "...we’re already on the noble routes."

Kael raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Does that change anything?"

The question came simply.

But it wasn’t innocent.

Carter hesitated for a second before answering.

"It changes who will show up."

The answer was direct.

No beating around the bush.

And it carried more meaning than the words themselves.

Kael was silent for a moment.

Then nodded slightly.

"Great."

He said.

And there was something about that "great" that made even the most experienced vampires around feel a slight unease. It wasn’t enthusiasm. It wasn’t provocation.

It was... anticipation.

Exelia let out a small sigh beside him, slightly adjusting the position of the clipboard against her body, though she clearly hadn’t been paying attention to notes for some time. Her eyes were much more focused on the surroundings now, on the patterns, the presences, the small changes that indicated they were approaching something bigger.

"You could at least pretend this is problematic," she commented, almost suggestively.

Kael tilted his head slightly.

"And lose the charm?"

She looked at him for a second.

Then she looked away, letting out a short laugh.

"Fair enough."
