Old Lady Li stood in the room with hands on her hips, her gaze scanning all around, before it finally landed on a locked box under the bed. She immediately crawled under the bed and dragged the box out, demanding, "What’s in it?!"
As she questioned, she yanked hard at the lock.
"Where is the key? Bring the key here!"
Li Chunhua was heartbroken over her cakes and candies. She usually didn’t dare to eat them and would occasionally let Jinbao and Xiaobao have a taste. Now it was all in the pockets of her nephews!
Li Chunhua was fuming inwardly, gritting her teeth. Upon hearing her mother’s demand, she stuttered, "The key isn’t with me, it’s with the children’s father."
Inside, she felt relieved. Thankfully, she had sent the key out with her husband while they were in the kitchen earlier.
"Go! Get him to bring the key here!" Old Lady Li sternly instructed.
Li Chunhua was her own flesh and blood, would she not know the thoughts going on in her daughter’s mind?! The money must be in that box!
Li Chunhua anxiously explained, "Mom, there’s nothing inside, just some old clothes."
Seeing that she was not getting the key, Old Lady Li pulled at the lock more forcefully. She even threatened to smash the box on the floor.
Li Chunhua tried to stop her and began to plead in poverty, "Mom, I’m not lying to you! The Chen Family does have some savings, but after splitting it between all the households, we didn’t have much left! We only have some meat, rice, and oil, and my mother-in-law favors the younger ones of the fourth and fifth households. We really don’t have much money!"
