Seven Hundred And Three
True to his word, after we appeared at Great Ormond Street, Henry’s friendly reporters, who were preparing a story on some of the other patients, just happened to chance across our group in the midst of our Ether Healing training, when three of the critically ill patients in intensive care had been Healed, and the fourth was in progress under my critical Eyes.
The crying, relieved families, suddenly healthy children, and most of all, the presence of our new medical staff for the Free Hospital, made for quite a scoop, considering that Catherine Allison and the others, who had been seen at New Year’s Honours, were also part of this. I did a quick interview, as did Ellie, Henry, Shaeula, Catherine and several of the others in our party, and after we’d finished emptying the intensive care ward of patients, I had a bright idea, and using my Eyes to scan the children in one of the nearby wards, I picked out another four who wouldn’t require much Ether Healing to cure.
Ironically, that didn’t always correlate to how sick they were, as one of them was almost as ill as the ten we’d brought to our hospital, but the problem was a tiny discrepancy in the function of her heart, which was too delicately placed for easy surgery without a significant risk of death.
Walking our staff who’d received the Eyes through the Ether Healing process with their own individual patients, guiding them, helping them get a preliminary feeling for it, I’d inspired them to ever greater eagerness to learn, and when Hyacinth returned, the brutal Ether Healing crash course could begin. They were understandably nervous about such terrible training, but they were all either tough veterans, committed to helping the sick, or both, so they’d surely power through, especially having seen the looks of wonder as I used Chirurgery to guide the limited aether of the four who had the Eyes, and while I had to supplement them to complete the Healing, it was the first time they’d basically performed, what was to them, a miracle with their own hands.
Of course, it wasn’t all wonderful. The parents and some of the older children who hadn’t received Healing were understandably bitter, even though Catherine and the new Head Nurse, Margaret Coleman, had assured them that soon enough their turns would come, and Henry’s reporter friend had asked one question which had stuck with me. Won’t the families of those children who died recently feel particularly bitter and aggrieved, after all, where was their miracle?
As we left the hospital, my thoughts went back to Ami, the young child we’d Healed during Hinata’s push to get ahead of negative press. Her father had said the same thing, that he’d blamed me for her suffering, even though he knew it wasn’t fair, nor my fault or responsibility. And that would be a weight that we’d all have to bear going forward in the future. Even the Gods couldn’t turn back time, nor save everyone. All we could do was take solace in the good we’d done. After all, there was a famous quote from a wizard in one of mom’s old books, a very famous one…
Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Not everyone, that was for sure. Some, like Mine-san, the trainees, those Fae that the damn toad killed, who then couldn’t be saved by Kin Bonding… and indeed, all those who passed away mourned by their loved ones, not just here in Britain or in Japan, but around the world. No, all we can do is our best. And we’ll continue to do so. And we’ve started changing the world yet again, here today.
“What’s on your mind?” Ellie asked, a touch concerned, as I’d fallen silent. Shaeula knew what I was thinking about, of course, so she had a kind yet knowing expression on her face. “Are… are you worried by what that reporter said? Honestly, Henry…” She turned her ire on her brother. “You said he was a friend to you. It was a horrible question! Just terrible!”
As Henry grimaced, running a hand through his reddish-brown hair defensively, giving himself time to think of an answer for his pushy younger sister, I shook my head. “No. It’s a fair question, in an unfair world. But we already know the answer…” Indeed, looking at Christina in her wheelchair, Shaeula pushing her along even though the chair had a perfectly serviceable motor and battery, I thought the situation was quite similar. “…all we can do is what our conscience dictates. And I believe that our legacy will be in more smiles and laughter than tears and wails.”
“More smiles and laughter, you say?” Catherine Allison, who’d been quiet after her first guided fumblings at Ether Healing, nodded. “Yes, I like that. And… there’s not one of us here, veteran or clinician, who hasn’t lost a comrade or patient, failed at something.” Nods from the group answered her, and even Uncle Daimon agreed.
“Sadly yes, one of our Onmyōji perished. Where there is Yang, there is also Yin. One cannot know happiness without understanding sadness exists. It can never truly be eliminated.”
“Maybe not, but our goal is to keep sorrow to its minimum. Like the Yin and Yang symbol, there’s a tiny bit of Yin within the Yang. If those small miseries are all that remains, I think we can say we’ve done well.” I countered. “Anyway…”
I gave my orders to Catherine and other others, and they’d be joining specialised training in my Territory to master the basics of Aether Manipulation and strengthen their Chakra networks as soon as possible. “…my phone’s blowing up, everyone’s eager to see me. Oh…” I turned to Christina then. “…you should get some rest. And we shouldn’t need any more Eyes from you until you’re fully recovered. I know you want to push yourself, but we don’t want to actually break you. That’s not restitution, just pointless vengeance, and worse, utter idiocy.”
“Oh, indeed.” Christina drawled. “And I do so abhor stupidity and waste. Though not all testing to destruction is foolish. Yes, yes, I know.” Even with her unfocussed, blurry vision she could see that quip annoyed me. “I’ll be patient. It would be a great loss to the world to snuff out my genius with the work yet undone. And to you…” She winked, her eyelid trembling.
“Sure, sure.” I gave up. Considering her sacrifice today had empowered medical staff who could go on to save hundreds, thousands or perhaps even more lives, I could treat her a little better today. “So what will you be doing while you recover?”
“Oh, Scryer will be coming over. She’ll keep me company as usual. I’ll probably spend some time with young Beth and her brother too. It seems she’s warming up to me, I knew my winning personality would charm her eventually. Oh, and that reminds me… when you’re seeing Adam again, can I come?”
Yeah, we both know that Bethany is just helping you because her father asked her to, at Adam’s urgings, if I’m not mistaken. But once more, I admire your positivity. “Oh? I thought you were worried Adam might disappear you… though I suppose considering he’s reinstated your access, that’s off the table, huh?”
“For now, certainly. Besides, you’d protect me, wouldn’t you, Akio?” She chuckled cheerfully. “No, since Adam’s back is up against the wall, it’s time to earn some more concessions. We have to think of the future.”
The future, huh? “That reminds me… are you going to be good to work on your laptop soon?”
“It shouldn’t be too hard. My eyesight should stabilise in short order, at least for normal optical viewing. I wouldn’t want to try and utilise my Spiritual Eyes, however. My spiritual body indeed feels rather… squirmy.”
I activated my own eyes, and yes, her Chimeric network was constantly shifting, fraying and repairing itself, the lingering effects of her Donations evident. I hate to say it, but she needs to boost her stats. She’s far too frail, persisting entirely on stubbornness and curiosity. But how… Lovers’ Link… yeah, that’s not going to work right now. A Favour… is risky. I hate to say it, but… I do trust her not to turn on us. As Shaeula says, she’s actually very honest, and while maybe just like I turned her head, seducing… hah, it makes me ill even thinking that, but I don’t mean it in a romantic or a sexual way… her away could be possible for someone who could offer her more opportunities… I can’t see that happening. Even so, a favour is a big step… maybe… upgrading my second Throne Of Heroes was a definite option once the security at the Ring Gate Hub had been maximised, which we were well on the way to doing. Thirty Levels would be a substantial improvement for her, and it offered the tempting possibility of being able to restrict some of her potential problematic behaviours…
Yes, it’s worth considering. But… yeah, if you decide to doubt someone, never trust them, if you trust them, never doubt them… “Yes, you’re a wreck, so take a break and get back to peak physical condition. Your Skills are rising quite nicely, which shows you’re putting in the work, but… do me a favour, and go back to your previous job as a researcher for a bit. Here.” I handed her the DVD I’d been given by the Pope. She took it, curious, and I leaned in and whispered into her ear, trying not to notice how her smeared lips quivered a little at my warm breath.
“It’s from the Pope. I don’t know what’s on it, but it could be important. Can you securely back everything up, and then start analysing it?”
“Oh, how wonderful. Normally I’d consider what is likely to be religious documents and ravings rather unscientific and irrelevant, but it is clearly not the case. Yes, once I feel better, I’ll get right on it.”
“Great. Do a good job and there might be a reward in it for you.” If you can count a Throne slot as a reward…
“I adore rewards. And have no fear, little miss Christina isn’t foolish enough to get her hopes up… Bethany was very strict on that, you know…” Christina complained. “…but…” She then fumbled out her phone, and with difficulty tapped at the screen a few times. My phone pinged, and curious, I checked it to see a series of numbers on a message from her.
“My sizes. Buy me some nice, fashionable clothes that you think would suit me. That’s a modest reward, yes?”
Actually… it is. That I can do.
“All right then. In that case, we should be off.” I said to Ellie and Shauela, who were both suddenly greatly eager.
“Oh, and what are your plans for the day?” Henry asked us, and I shrugged.
“Sightseeing and shopping, basically. Though the President of the USA is hounding me for a meeting, I’ve managed to put him off until tomorrow. He’s gone golfing instead today, apparently. For the so-called leader of the free world, he’s awfully… free.” I snorted. Still, I’d feel a little more confident after I’ve collected some more Favours, some caused by America’s wrongdoings. I’ve seen the manifest, but without checking them all with my Eyes I can’t be sure precisely what any of them are capable of…
“That sounds like our dear leader.” Christina snorted. “I have to say, I never much paid attention to the man in the White House, but I know Adam loathes him. So much so he tried to downplay everything that was happening and got away with it until the big show in Britain.” She let out a dry chuckle.
Catherine seemed troubled when I mentioned the President, but I gave her a reassuring smile. “All right then, we’re off. Everyone knows what they’re doing?”
“Yes, though, good luck, Akio.” Henry teased. “Even shopping with one woman is bad enough. You’re with… I don’t even know how many. All the waiting around and questions on ‘whether I look good’ or ‘does this make me look fat’ must be rather trying.”
“Oh, I don’t know.” I grabbed Shaeula’s hand and slid my other arm through Ellie’s. “It has its perks, Henry, it certainly does…”
***
“Wow, I’m getting fired up…” my sis struck a banzai pose, not caring that passers-by were watching. We were in Mayfair now, having met up with everyone after they finished their sightseeing cruise. “…retail therapy is just what we need to soothe our weary spirits!”
“Don’t be annoying.” Eri bopped her on the head gently with her knuckles. “Your spirit is hardly weary, you’ve done nothing but talk like a machinegun at everyone all day.”
“Wow, yeah, maybe, but I am still stressed. Mom and dad… no, let’s not do this now. Anyway…” she glanced at Ellie and Shaeula, who’d somewhat regretfully relinquished me when we rejoined the larger group. “…let’s go crazy and burn bro’s wallet to the ground!”
“I did promise.” I chuckled. “So, lead on. I know you’ve all done your research.”
“I’m not the most… prolific… of shoppers.” Ellie admitted. “But it would be a lie to say I don’t know the luxury shops of London. So I can lead us.”
“That sounds good.” I chuckled. “But… you know, how about while we’ve got this precious opportunity, where we don’t have to rush, you all consider some different styles?” I glanced at Daiyu. “For example, I think with your long, toned legs, you’d look great in shorts or a miniskirt once in a while. And…” glancing at Asha, I imagined her dressed completely different to usual. “…you know, with your skin and hair, I just see you looking exotic and sexy in sportswear.”
“It seems you’ve given this a lot of thought, Aki. What about me? And Tan?” Shiro asked, and I grinned.
“You should be able to come up with suggestions if anyone can, Shiro. Anyway, it’s not just me who has ideas. Pick out what you all like and give each other advice. Today, money’s no object.”
“Yes.” Hinata giggled. “That’s true. Compared to what we’ve spent this morning, even if Akio bought a whole store, we’d barely feel it. Oh, and what would I look good in, Akio?” She couldn’t help but ask, and I responded with a mysterious smile.
Sorry you’re missing out, Hyacinth. You could have delayed your trip…
No, while I always want to be there with you, Akio, and with the mistresses too, I feel it unwise to put this off. I should devour this tide of sorrow and make its power ours as soon as possible, even If I can only drain a fraction at a time, it will be important. I… feel it.
Foresight, maybe?
Perhaps, or just… experience. No, I shall eat my fill and return tonight. You can spoil me then. As for missing out… I think not… In my mind, I could see her teasing smile, and her next question surprised me. Think of an outfit…
Okay… I imagined the hoodie and jeans Hyacinth wore on our night date in London after she won the game of cards with Shiro and Shaeula that one time. That was a very memorable night. Hyacinth was very bold and daring…
I see. I enjoyed that night. Perhaps tonight, we can go a little further? She licked her lips seductively, and then light element flashed, and suddenly a double of herself was wrapped in the illusion of the outfit I had envisioned, and since she was facing it, I could see herself through her own eyes. See? Pick out what you feel I would look wonderful in, and what you would like, and I shall try them on for you, even separated by half a world.
That’s… quite the trick.
I learned from those Valkyries. Do you like it?
I do indeed. Though actually, that reminds me… Wisdom World was unusually quiet. I could hear Rose’s and Lin’s thoughts, but they seemed to be busy elsewhere, and since they had battles and trials far in advance of anything we could imagine down here on Earth, I didn’t like to distract them, even momentarily and despite their Split Thoughts, as a moment’s inattention in such fights could lead to injury or worse…
I am sure they shall be fine. None wish to die until you can see them face to face, Akio. Now then, set that aside and think of us. You know my sizes intimately, I am certain… Hyacinth teasingly soothed me, and we chatted even as the rest of us entered the first store.
Yes, that I do. After all, my hands and lips have touched every part of you…
“I like it here…” Ellie was saying. The few patrons were wealthy tourists or well-to-do Londoners, and we quickly attracted attention, but the clientele at this flagship store knew better than to take photos of us or the like. “…considering what we are about to spend, we probably could have reserved a few hours…” she mused, and Hinata shook her head.
“I don’t know about that. I think it’s fun sometimes to mingle with the public. Of course, the changing rooms area should be secured.” She winked playfully at her. “Eleanor, I daresay you can handle that?”
“I would think so.” she agreed, and after some rapid conversation with the assistants, any other shoppers who were going to buy clothing and needed to try it on would be allowed to use the staff areas, while the changing rooms would be for our personal use, but we’d be happy to share the rest of the store with the public.
“All right then!” my sis grinned. “I’m first! Sister privilege! Then…” She grabbed Yukiko and Tsukiko. “You pair! Come on, let’s go, let’s go, wow, I’m getting fired up!”
Seeing them exchange a helpless glance as my sister’s enthusiasm got the better of them, I smiled. Yeah, it’s going to be a long evening, but… a fun one…
***
“Oh wow, if I wasn’t a steady girl, I think you’d take my breath away, Tsukiko!” My sis was praising the shy older woman enthusiastically, and I couldn’t say I disagreed. She’d tried on a number of outfits, ranging from sportswear, jeans, dresses, jumpers, and even some rather racy miniskirts and stockings, but now she was wearing a pair of tight dolphin-style shorts in red, with an ivory-silk shirt, cut very fashionably, with ruby buttons glimmering under the lights of the changing room. “That look should be illegal.”
Tsukiko flushed nearly as red as her shorts, not used to clothes which offered so little coverage, but yes, it was explosive, as was her rich figure. “I do not know, I am a little embarrassed, but… Akio, what do you think?”
“I think it’s awesome. The colour scheme hints at your role as the Diviner, but really, seeing your legs is a rare treat. You’re tall and curvaceous, so… yeah. Yes.” I was lost for words, and my sis snickered.
“Right then. Next up is underwear. Though it’s going to be tough under that shirt. Hmm… how troubling. Anyway, you’re up next, Yukiko.”
“I don’t think I can, after hearing that reaction.” The curtains of the other stall twitched.
“Don’t be shy! We’re all gorgeous!” My sis opened the curtain and dived in, and after a brief flurry of squawks and protests, she dragged Yukiko out. “And trust me, my bro’s expression will prove it. See? Told you!”
Indeed, I was struck dumb. I’d picked out the clothes for Yukiko, sure, but she’d made the most of them, and her effort had paid off. She’d removed her glasses and braided her hair into a set of twin tails. She was in a daring, golden mini dress, a ruby stole around her chest revealing a hint of cleavage, and she had paired it with a pair of six-inch heels in metallic ruby. She worries about her height, so the heels help, and… she doesn’t like ostentatious clothing, but…
“Yeah, you look awesome!” My sis gave her a thumbs-up. “And my bro knows so too. You’re a Princess. I know you don’t exactly like that, but… you’re born to be the centre of attention. Get some confidence!”
“Yes, I knew you’d look great, just like you did at the Ball, but here, we’re going for the gap. You’re normally shy, prim and proper, so such a daring, sexy dress… one that exposes your cleavage, shoulders and back, as well as your legs… yeah, it’s like you’re a whole new you! Nice touch with the stole, it makes me want to unwrap you…” I enjoyed making her blush, and Tsukiko added her own praise, even as my sis slipped into the changing room again.
“Okay, it’ll take me a few minutes to get changed into my next outfit. Bro, I think Daiyu’s ready too…”
Indeed, Daiyu had slipped out of her own changing room silently, and she was wearing a miniskirt, almost like a cheerleader one, just far more elegant, with layered silver and blue cloth, as well as a sleeveless halter-neck top in matching silver. Paired with blue heels and handbag, she had a completely fresh, charming air.
“It is a bit different to what I am used to.” Daiyu glanced down at herself, shaking her head. “Does it… please you?”
“Of course it does. But does it please you?” I asked. “Oh, and what you tried on before was great too.” Hotpants and jumper mini-dress, as well as thigh-socks… yeah, she was cute, whereas here she’s more mature and charming. My wallet may bleed, but my eyes will appreciate its sacrifice!
“Yes, I do feel I like to look beautiful. And that… a more secular way of living, rather than being restricted to Cultivator robes and comfortable training gear, is more fulfilling. More importantly…” Daiyu boldly leaned in for a kiss, seizing my lips. Our tongues tangled together wetly, and as we parted, she was grinning in her usual slight manner, satisfaction evident to those who knew her, Tsukiko, Yukiko and the others nearby gently smiling or giggling, faces pink.
“…I wish to keep our… love life… satisfying, my Dao Companion. Putting a fresh wrapper on a gift can make it more appealing, so Aiko says.”
Sis… not sure where you get off giving out relationship advice, but… you’re not wrong.
“Ta-da!” Speaking of my sis, she changed quicker than anticipated, and yeah, the switch was shocking. “How do you like it? I’ve taken some tips from both Shiro, who knows what you secretly like, and Bethany! I have to stand out…”
Indeed, my sis hadn’t used all of the clothes I’d picked out for her, she’d added in her own selection, and… I had to admit she looked gorgeous. She was wearing a black and silver top, sleeveless, and the top was slit repeatedly along the chest potions, thin, embroidered lines, offering faint glimpses of what was below as she moved. The miniskirt I’d picked out, which was also black, she’d worn, but she’d added a thick silver chain-link belt, loops hanging down, and paired it with silver stockings, and heavy black lace-up boots. Her hair, she’d left loose, and she’d added purple ribbons to the underside of her miniskirt, perhaps tied to her suspenders, and they hung down, flapping as she walked, drawing the eyes.
“It’s me, goth Aiko! I’m not good with the gloom, but… you like this sort of girl, right bro?”
“He does. Aki’s not a complicated man.” Shiro chortled as she appeared from her own changing room. “He’s into cute, quiet black-haired Yamato Nadeshiko girls, like he thought Eri was.” Eri, who had a number of advantages when it came to dressing up now, due to being able to adapt her body shape to make any outfit pop, crossed her arms, though in her tight white and silver pencil dress, paired with silver moon and star earrings and silver heels, she drew my eyes for a moment, before I turned back to Shiro, who… was dressed shockingly different to normal.
Even though I picked it, I’m still blown away.
“But yes, Aki also likes the spunky, in-your-face type of girls too. Yeah, I know I rock white, but sometimes Aki’s taste shows he pays attention.” Her hair bundled into a long ponytail, threaded with black ribbons, Shiro was wearing a short silver denim jacket, which was half length so came down to between her waist and the bottom of her chest, and under that she was wearing a black, patterned t-shirt, with silver stars and hearts. Then, she was also wearing silver micr-shorts, and black fishnet stockings, paired off with silver heels.
“He’s matching my hair with its opposite. With a bit of makeup, which I don’t normally use…” Indeed, Shiro’s beauty didn’t need gilding, but she’d lightly touched around her eyes with a bit of mascara, and painted her lips, so she really stood out from her usual appearance. “…I definitely look like a glamourous uni girl… Aki would just love to run into me in a club…”
“You can wear it in Gangnam. Though Akio would be jealous when you’re fighting the guys off, Shiro.” Yu-mi, accompanied by a shy Haru, agreed. “You’re stunning. I have to say though…” Yu-mi blushed a little. “…I think I made a bit too much of an impression on him during our time in Gomdori-nim’s club.”
True, you brought it on yourself. Once I started thinking of you as a potential girlfriend, I remembered that night you were so drunkenly cute and innocently defenceless… hence the outfit…
“It is rather bold.” Yukiko, who was finally getting over her own embarrassment, observed, curiously. Women liked dressing up and fashion, so they shared an interest. “I was too embarrassed not to cover myself a little…”
Indeed, I’d picked out a similar dress for Yu-mi to what Yukiko was wearing, this one in pink and white, and it was tight on her thighs, and very short, so she’d have to be careful every time she sat down.
“A G-string is about all I can fit under this…” Yu-mi reddened. “…Akio, you’re so daring!”
“Hey, I also picked you out a shorts and t-shirt combo, I think you’d look fresh and sporty in that too…” I defended myself, even if it was true, and Yu-mi, perhaps as she was a party girl, had that sort of sexy air about her which made dressing in such a provocative manner seem natural.
“As for me…” Haru shrugged.
“Yeah. Not cool, bro. I mean, come on, Haru’s a real beauty. And that’s what you pick?”
Haru had changed into a dress, sure, but it was still quite modest. The concession I’d made was staying away from white or black, and I’d gone for a sunnier yellowish orange, to draw the eyes. Still, it had a hem below the knees and showed off her arms but little cleavage. I still think you look eye-catching and gorgeous in it though, Haru.
Thank you. But Aiko is right. I… do feel I can be a bit more daring. And I saw you looking at those dresses and thinking of me. I don’t mind. Maybe not here, but tonight…
Fine. Try them on, and if they fit, I’ll buy them.
Thank you, Akio. Having a gift from a boyfriend… it still doesn’t seem real. Sometimes I worry I’ll wake up, and I’ll be with him… but then I remember I’m strong now, and you’re by my side. So… most of the time when I close my eyes, I see different things now…
And until sometimes becomes rarely becomes never, I’ll always be there for you… and afterwards, I’ll still be there…
“What about us!” Michiru and Miyu had come along, it seemed they’d blended into the group rather well. I’d picked them clothes, of course, perhaps it was a bit much for the start of dating, but considering what we’d done already… huh.
Michiru stepped out from behind Miyu, who was wearing a tight short black skirt and ruffled blouse in charming pink, making her charms more adult, especially with the added stockings and the cut of the shirt, which was quite daring, but… I didn’t pick that out…
For Michiru, I’d decided on a summer-style dress, cute and floaty, for one outfit, whereas the other was boyish shorts and knee-socks, and a sporty sleeveless t-shirt with a low back. Instead, she’d appeared in a high-end tracksuit, of fine white cloth. On seeing my quizzical gaze, she grinned, so I had to ask the question.
“Uh, it’s a nice tracksuit, you can tell its high quality, and you look cute, but… won’t that just turn transparent when you sweat? I don’t think it’s the right sort of tracksuit for a physically fit and active girl like you, Michiru?”
“You misunderstand, Akio-sama!” Michiru’s expression was fierce, her tone animated. “That is the beauty of it! For I am wearing nothing underneath, so when we work up a sweat, you will be able to see my shameful appearance. And if you choose to unleash your desires upon me, then the stains will add to the artful image, and if you please, you can unzip me, and I will be utterly bare and at your mercy, unable to resist any shameful, lewd command…”
“She’s completely insane, this one. But for some reason I find her funny…” Shiro chuckled, but Miyu quickly sighed and deflated Michiru’s ardent passion.
“That is all very well, Michiru, but… if that is your plan, then you will miss out, as Akio shall have no reason to buy you any underwear, which is next, yes? And besides, the other outfits were picked for you by Akio himself, surely you would wear them to please him?”
Michiru froze for a moment, before rushing back and grabbing back what I’d picked out. “An oversight!” she cried, eyes wide. “I definitely need underwear, sexy, mature underwear to persuade you to ravish me without pity or mercy. I need to be so seductive you cannot hold back, Akio-sama!”
Shaeula, who was paying attention, and waiting for my praise, her tight, small dolphin shorts and t-shirt which bared her waist, both in pink and paired with heavy boots, a fresh, charming look for her, wove wind element, preventing Michiru’s passionate cries from disturbing the other customers. I winked at Shaeula, and she smiled back knowingly.
She does remind me of myself, back when we first became intimate. She is a very… thirsty… young female. Not that I blame her, not at all. Now, tell me again how adorable and desirable I am…
Yeah, you’re gorgeous. You might not be buxom or tall, but you’re certainly utterly cute, and those pink shorts make your legs pop, and showing off your midriff is cute too…
Wonderful. Yes, I do enjoy yukatas and summer dresses, but it is nice to change my style sometimes.
Yeah, I bet you’ll rock the white jeans I picked out too…
“Asha, what do you think of this?” I asked, bringing the quieter Dryad into the conversation, holding up the outfit I’d picked for Hyacinth. “By the way, that looks great on you.” Asha mostly wore white, floaty gowns and dresses, but now she was in neat navy-blue jeans and a lighter blue sleeveless shirt with golden buttons in two neat rows. It was a loose shirt, so her swelling chest wasn’t constricted, and it had long, hanging tassels ending in gold to draw the eyes.
“Thank you. It is… unusual for me, these constricting… jeans… as you call them. But I suppose I do wish to vary my appearance, lest you get bored of me.”
“Never.” I promised. “Anyway, I think Hyacinth would look beautiful in this silver dress. It’s got a tight skirt, but flares out at the top, accommodating her… assets. Throw in these heels and a purple cardigan to cover her bare arms and she’ll look noble and elegant, but still achingly sexy.”
I already knew the answer, as Hyacinth was modelling it for me in her mind, alongside a similar outfit to Tsukiko’s, purple dolphin shorts and pale pink shirt, contrasting her hair and eyes beautifully.
“Yes, I have no doubt she will indeed be beautiful. Hyacinth has changed.” Asha added. “Her… inner self… shines now. I only wish that you continue to cherish and love her, so her true nature always remains beautiful.”
“I will.” I promised, and Hyacinth agreed in my mind.
I know, Akio. But you must also promise me… make Asha’s dream a reality as well. Too many dreams are lost to sorrow. Nurture and protect her, and your children. As shall I…
I know. We all will. Together and forever.
“Hyacinth passes on her thanks. Oh, Hinata, Motoko, Natsumi, you’re all done?”
“Yes.” Hinata giggled. “I think I’m seeing a theme in your choices though.” Hinata’s hair was pulled back into a smooth ponytail to complement the look I’d given her. She was in tight, tiny shorts too, and a t-shirt, but over that was a matching tracksuit jacket, paired with the shorts, in her favourite purple. “You like the more petite of us to look fresh and energetic. I don’t hate it though. And…” The t-shirt showed off Hinata’s rather decent chest for her height as she leaned back ostentatiously. “…I bet if I took a leaf out of Michiru’s book and went for a jog, you’d be tantalised. Don’t worry though, I’d keep zipped up until I got back. I’m for your eyes only.”
“As am I.” Natsumi chuckled. “So, I made a slight change to your design.” Natsumi was dressed rather like Eri’s usual appearance, in a long, cute cardigan, but she’d replaced my pick of patterned t-shirt with a camisole-style top, showing off her own curves, and she was wearing skinny three-quarter-length jeans and high-heeled, strappy sandals. “Like what you see? Oh, and don’t forget Motoko either…”
“I am somewhat embarrassed, but… I feel I look good.” Motoko was in red jeans, with a tight fit and a low rise, and a heavy black belt was around her waist, studded with glass crystals. Her shirt was black, and high cut, exposing her midriff and it had short sleeves, exposing her slender arms. Lastly, she wore a choker around her neck, and her hair had been bundled back, and it looked like someone had helped her with her makeup, as she, like Shiro, had also applied some eyeshadow and mascara, and… yeah. Damn, everyone’s truly gorgeous, but perhaps Motoko might just be the most perfect of all, the slightly punk look suits her wonderfully…

“Yes, it’s a look you’d never expect on a daughter of nobility…”
“I want to try a similar look too…” Hinata added, and soon Natsumi and Miyu were pondering how they could put their own take on it.
“You’ve corrupted those innocent girls, Aki…” I heard Shiro’s voice, realising she hadn’t spoken in a while, and when I turned, my eyes widened. It was actually Tan now, though she’d let Shiro speak, and she was wearing the clothes I’d picked out for her. It was a beautiful black dress, with a wide opening along her side, artfully held shut by silver pins, but still exposing a swathe of her rich brown back, belly and sides. It was slit down the leg too, though to keep it classy it didn’t show much cleavage. Under her dress, she wore silver-grey stockings, and had metallic silver heels on, and the sleeves of her dress were held together by the silver pins too.
“Damn, we have a new challenger!” I gushed. “I knew it’d look great on you, but… it’s daring. It takes poise and a beautiful figure to pull that off!” Indeed, the shop assistant had told me this dress was actually a custom order from a Hollywood celebrity for the Oscars, but the sizing was wrong, as she’d exaggerated her figure. But Tan had the Divine proportions that the actress could only pretend to have with padding and surgery, and also the imperious, regal charisma to own it.
“Of course. Though if I am honest, I had to make some… adjustments.” Tan’s smile was wicked. “Fortunately, such is not impossible for me. I am she who Allures… only you.”
Oh, I get it. It’s… uh, a bit of a waste of adherence, but she looks so bloody gorgeous I think it was worth it.
“As for me…” Ellie added, wearing the sharp, almost masculine cut of black waistcoat with antique bronze buttons, over girlish green shirt, coupled with a long bronze tie-style neck ribbon, and black, sporty long shorts over green tights, with matching bronze heels, embodying the combination of her cool style, calling back to her armour. “…I’m surprised at how you see me. It’s a bit... androgenous.”
“Hey, I picked out some cute dresses and sexier shorts for you too.” I protested jovially. “Besides, I’d say you’re more charming than boyish like that.” As the others nodded, Ellie frowned, before shaking her head.
“If you think I look charming, I’m satisfied.”
“I do, I do. Any one of you would be Fortune enough for a lifetime, just being with me. Damn, I’d best watch out for Karma. I’ve accrued too much good Karma here I think… oh, maybe the fact I’ve annihilated my wallet, or will be, getting all of these clothes for everyone, is balancing it out? Or the good deed that the sales assistants here have secured their year-end bonuses?”
As everyone laughed at that, Daiyu particularly amused by my blatant misuse of Karma, Eri stepped in.
“And last, but not least…” Eri had changed from her earlier outfit, and also altered her body shape too, becoming more busty… she really wants to stand out. Maybe she’s a little jealous. It’s cute. Now she was in shorts too, and a cropped t-shirt, her black tail waving. She was wearing stockings and suspenders under the small shorts, and another chunky, ostentatious belt. Her t-shirt was a bold red one, with explosions of colour, like she’d been splattered with paint, and coupled with her bright shorts, she was far more ostentatious than usual. But as I’d said, Eri could change her figure to look amazing in anything, an unfair advantage some of the others envied. But with her was… Wow, looking good. I’ve got great taste, and you’ve got excellent style.
“Don’t stare. Or maybe stare a little.” Kana giggled, face red. “I love them, Akio. I love you. I’m… very much looking forward to our date tonight. It’s everything I always dreamed of, before I knew you were my dream too.” Kana was wearing a gold and red t-shirt reminiscent of Hihi’irokane, and it was slim fit and showed off her ample curves. Over that she was wearing a black dress, mirroring her hair, though the dress was scooped at the centre from her neck down to her navel, and both the large area of exposure, to show off her t-shirt, and the long, semi-transparent black lace sleeves, were fringed with golden cloth. Her skirt part was quite short and tight, hugging her gorgeous legs, and she was wearing golden stockings and red heels. She then spun around, and her back had a similar scooped appearance to the front, but it was covered with a semi-transparent black lace mesh, her red and gold t-shirt showing through.
“You look absolutely gorgeous.” I praised. I’d liked the dress, but it was definitely one worn over an undershirt or t-shirt, else she’d be flashing the world. I’d also picked out some punkier clothes in a similar style to Eri’s and Motoko’s too.
“I know. I have to. Though it’s a shame to spoil the mystery before the date. I’d have liked to shock you.”
“Oh, I’m shocked, Kana. But in a good way.”
“Fear not though…” my sis smirked, darting around, taking pictures of everyone, and I had no doubt that the various chat groups she and the girls were in, such as Adamant, would be getting bombarded by images of the girls all dressed up shortly. “…there’s one way left to surprise my bro. Though… you’ll need to buy a set yourself, one he hasn’t picked out for you.” My sis faced me boldly, winking. “Bro, time to fulfil your promise and take us all underwear shopping. The selection in here is nice and all, but…”
“I know the best place.” Ellie agreed with a sigh. “But first, we should change. These are for tonight, remember?”
Oh, yes. Underwear stores. The hell for men, as we always feel judged and out-of-place. Though for me… I’ll be right in the thick of it, so nobody can complain… right then, time to bite the bullet…

“Here.” Daiyu handed me a drink, as she sat down beside me. I was exhausted, but the girls were still going at it, most of them, anyway, though Daiyu was already satisfied, a bag of beautiful, cute and seductive undergarments I’d bought her safely stored away. “It still surprises me. Oh, our Sect was hardly backwards, we had bras, for example, but… they were functional, and supportive for martial arts. Not from such fine cloth, or so scanty. Believe it or not, we Cultivators are quite conservative, likely why Dual Cultivation was looked down upon. While some old perverts like Chong Gui are said to pursue many women, it is generally an advantage for we female Cultivators to go to our eventual bridal beds a virgin, inexperienced and pure.”
“That’s not an unusual conceit.” I shook my head, as I sipped at my tea, watching the girls argue and tease each other. Everyone had received many gifts from me, endlessly amused and interested by what tastes I had, and what I thought suited them best, but they also wanted to pick out their own choices too, ones I hadn’t yet seen. Though unlike my sister’s joke before, I was still paying for them, I wasn’t going to stint them today. This is sort of like a reward for enduring the Pilgrimage, I guess.
“Yes.” Daiyu agreed. “Even in the days of Kunlun’s heights, such things were surely important, although… Tamamo-no-Mae has told me a little. Some poor men and women, mostly women, due to our nature, with exceptionally rate Constitutions and Physiques, were exceptions, used to satisfy those of power, and to bear offspring who might possess the same or better. I…” She leaned her head on my shoulder, content. “…am far more fortunate. We all are.”
“I bought clothes for Mae too.” And Hana. It felt awful leaving her out. And yes, I did buy for Christina too, like she asked. But I got the girls to pick out their underwear… “And when Caihong and Liena wake, we’ll go shopping again. They’ll need to adapt to this new world. But… you’re worried, aren’t you? About them, and your place?”
“Worried?” Daiyu tasted the word, considering. “Not… precisely. I am simply wishing to preserve my value.”
“Your value is being you, Daiyu.” I insisted, kissing her forehead gently. “I knew you were tense today. And if you feel your knowledge of Cultivation is lacking, then we’ll find a way for you to deepen it. Just because Su Caihong and Su Liena might know more, might regain their strength and exceed what you can manage… it doesn’t mean that you’re suddenly not as important to me, or I love you any less. No more than Kana replaced Eri, Motoko did Hinata, or Hyacinth has Shaeula. So be confident. It’s honestly a good thing. If we can persuade Su Caihong to share her knowledge with you, you might reach Sainthood, no, not might, you will reach Sainthood one day.”
“That would be wonderful. But I cannot yet see even the foothills of that peak, the clouds are too thick, and the road ahead is paved with daggers. Fortunately…” She snuggled into me, black eyes affectionate. “…I have you to carry me. Even if I daresay you will be unable to resist disrobing me, to see what I wear beneath my clothes.”
“I can’t say I’m uninterested. You’re a beauty Daiyu.”
“Yes. Black Jade. But sometimes being more colourful is relieving, I see that now.” She paused for a moment as I sipped my tea, and as you’d expect from such an upmarket, excusive establishment, one with a Royal Warrant, no less, given by Liz in the past, it was excellent. “Are you not a little bored?”
“With your company? Never.” I chuckled. “Or do you mean watching everyone enjoy themselves? I’d never get tired of that either. It’s a feast for my eyes too.” Watching the girls scurry about, checking out underwear, accessories and jewellery, as well as sleepwear and makeup, faces bright, was a wonderful thing. “Though some of the earlier modelling was a bit… high-pressure for me.” I chuckled self-depreciatingly, and Daiyu snatched another cheeky kiss, tasting of tea, and as our lips parted, a momentary bridge of saliva linked us, before she licked at her damp lips, scattering it.
“Have no fear, we are eager to carry on from where we left off last night. We shall satisfy your lusts with our bodies. We too crave it. But before that, we must ready this yacht. I did enjoy our trip earlier, but this, at night, shall be magnificent.”
“Yes, our very own pleasure cruise.” I agreed. “Checking out the lit-up London skyline, having a Ball all of our own, no annoying press or other guests to bother us.”
“But before that, you have a promise to keep.” Daiyu added, and I nodded.
“Yeah, Kana. I promised her a London date, and I’m looking forward to it a lot. She was beautiful earlier. Oh, you were too, and everyone else…” Daiyu stopped my lips with hers again, tongue swirling with mine. I heard Shaeula snicker, and Shiro whistle, but we ignored them, kissing deeply, until Daiyu parted a touch regretfully, then placed a finger against my lip.
“While we love your compliments, I adore them, we have no need of you to repeat that every time. We know sometimes your focus will be on one of us. We are hardly as jealous as you imagine.”
“I know. You’re all wonderful and understanding. I’m just trying to be fair. But I’ll bear your suggestion in mind and do better.”
“See that you do. Make Kana’s evening wonderful, and then tonight we shall all carouse our cares away.”
“Got it. I can take a hint.” We kissed one more time, and I resolved to make sure Daiyu got plenty of attention tonight. Our long, passionate smooch was interrupted by my phone ringing, and we parted, both wishing the kiss was longer. But then, tonight there will be no distractions. I pulled out my phone, to see it was Constantine calling. At last. I’ve had reports, but he’s been a bit evasive.
“Hi, what’s up?” I greeted him, and there was a brief moment of hesitation, before Constantine replied.
“Oh, nothing much. It’s just… we’ve brought Miss Andreassen to Britain as planned, and she’s… keen… to see you.” I didn’t miss his slight hesitation. I suppose her being wary is understandable, and I wonder if she saw the news from yesterday…
“Great. There’s another Chosen like us here, from America. Carrie Sørensen. I’d hope she could attend too, it would do us good to all meet up and discuss common goals and agree to work together.”
“Oh. Yes, I… don’t think Miss Andreassen will mind. Anyway, at times it’s been… quite the rough job. Hah…” he tittered nervously. “…don’t mind me, I’m just complaining, Akio. I could use a holiday though… I never thought I’d meet… uh, never mind. I’m just rambling.”
Yes, you are.
“So, I’m quite busy…” I began, and Constantine interrupted me.
“I know. We’ve seen it. But… trust me, you… want to make time for this. Miss Andreassen and… no, she’s just intense. But you wanted to speak to her, so… how about tomorrow? It’s been arranged, at the Ritz restaurant…”
I was surprised at that. Even I’d heard of the Ritz before coming to London, and it was usually always fully booked well in advance. Sure, Hinata could probably make a call and get us in, or Ellie, but…
“The Ritz? Like the hotel?” I clarified, and Constatine agreed.
“Yes. I was… a little surprised myself.”
“I guess being a lab technician pays more than I expected. Fine. I’ll end up with the bill anyway, no doubt. It’s only good manners as we invited her here. I’ll be there. Are you and your sister…?”
“I think we’ll give it a miss. Can we take a day or two to relax before our next mission?”
“Uh, sure, I guess.”
“Great. Then… yes. Just be on your best behaviour. Please.” With that, Constantine hung up, and I must have seemed a bit bemused, as Daiyu smiled slightly.
“I would say it is she who needs to behave with you. Now then…” Daiyu somewhat regretfully disentangled herself from me. “…I can see everyone’s gazes look a little dangerous. I fear you might have to offer opinions on some more undergarments.”
Seeing the predatory glints in their eyes, I nodded. “Yes, it seems so. Oh, woe is me, what a burden.”
“Yes, you shall have to bear this weight, greater than Mount Tai, upon your shoulders…” Daiyu made a joke, seeming less tense than earlier, and as I met Kana’s eyes, she hid what she was holding behind her back.
“No peeking!” she insisted. “This one’s… uh… a surprise!” Her face was red, but she met my stare boldly, smiling seductively, and I couldn’t help but chuckle.
“I like surprises. When it’s from you.”
“Seducer! Rake! Gigolo! Lothario!” Kana began to giggle, calling me names, and I chuckled too.
“Hey, you know a lot of fancy terms…”
“Of course I do. I’m dating the biggest playboy of all time. But… I’m glad that I am.” As Kana smiled at me, I felt warm and comfortable inside.
“I’m glad you are too, despite how much of a jerk I was.”
“I forgive you. I’ve already forgiven you. But… now it’s time to make it up to me. I want this date to be magical…” Kana gazed into my eyes. “…a memory we’ll cherish and talk about forever.”
“That… that I can do. But first…” I patted her head warmly, as I walked past her towards the girls who were all clutching more sets of underwear. “…I’d best have my viewing parade, before there’s a riot…”
“True.” Kana laughed, as Daiyu came up beside her. “Though that would certainly be a more exciting headline for the tabloid papers Eleanor hates so much. I can see it now… a score of beautiful girls in lingerie rampaging through central London, destroying all in their wake. Jealous man unleashes burst of light element which blinds the entirety of London to preserve their dignity…”
“Page three would be spoilt for choice. Though I’d be right there next to Akio, burning down the entirety of Fleet Street…” Ellie spoke cryptically, but I just about understood. I wasn’t alone, as Miyu nodded.
“Oh, I remember grandfather telling me Fleet Street is home to most of the tabloid printing presses and their headquarters, yes?”
“That’s right…” As Ellie went on an impassioned rant about the ’scoundrels of the gutter press’ and ‘they are the reason I can’t wear cute or comfortable clothes in public…’, Shaeula and Hinata, teasing expressions on their faces, and scanty underwear in hand, came and hauled me over to the changing rooms.
“Come-come now, while everyone is distracted by Eleanor, we shall seize our chance!” Shaeula purred, while Hinata agreed, nodding.
“That’s right. We need to get that same stare of admiration from you Tsukiko, Tan and Motoko got! Don’t worry, we have some secret weapons of our own!”
“Yes, potent weapons indeed, we shall leverage our charms most-most wisely!” Shaeula added, and with those bold promises spoken, I couldn’t help but look forward to it.
Yes, Daiyu’s right. What a terrible, terrible Mount Tai I have to climb… and what gorgeous views there are from the top…
