“And for our next caller, we have Michael, from Rock Springs. Hello, Michael. So, just what do you think of what’s been happening in Japan lately?”

“Well, Chuck, first I’d like to say I’m a big fan.”

“Thank you, Michael. I always appreciate that.”

“Well then…” Michael’s voice crackled over the telephone, the rural network not exactly the best. “…I have to say, Chuck, I’m horrified. Firstly, the world was made by God, we shouldn’t be letting these unholy sinners reshape it as they will. It can’t bode well, if anything, I’d say the Rapture is coming, and our Lord will be back soon. False Gods, global conflict, natural disasters. They’re all clear signs of the Rapture and Armageddon.”

“That’s very interesting, Michael. It sure would be swell if the faithful, good people of America, who follow the Bible, are finally given their reward. So, you must be happy at the prospect.”

“I wouldn’t say that, Chuck.” Michael disagreed, his tone stern. “Yes, we’ll be saved, but what of those left behind? Sure, they brought it on themselves by being wicked sinners, eating up vice and depravity, forgetting that it was God who made us. But I’m not a cruel man, Chuck…”

“No, assuredly you are not, Michael. You must be a good, God-fearing fellow, salt of the earth…” His sincere, kind voice sounded pleasant to the listeners all across Wyoming.

“Of course. Go to church every week, pay my tithe, work hard, mud on my boots, calluses on my hands. I’m not like those lazy sinners, who don’t want to do their darndest to live a good, humble life. Makes me sick. Anyway, I’m worried that they’ll break the world, just like Tokyo’s broken. I couldn’t believe it at first, it doesn’t make sense, you know?”

“Mhm, do go on…” Chuck encouraged him, humming soulfully.

“I mean, I’m a farmer, Chuck. Been tilling the soil since my grandpappy’s days, as he did, learned from his own father. If my field’s an acre, it’s always going to be an acre. You can’t tell me it isn’t some occult, Devil-loving witchcraft, changing that!”

“Definitely. Far too much ungodly sin about these days, Michael, no question of that.”

“Exactly, Chuck. And I dare say this Akio fellow is worst of all. I don’t hold much with no Catholics, I mean, those sinners worship the Pope, not our lord Jesus Christ, but… they’ve got one thing right. These so-called Gods are just false idols. Devils creeping in to follow the Antichrist and set up the Day of Judgement.”

“Oh? Didn’t they say the Antichrist would be a charming man, who cares nothing about international law or decency? And… isn’t Akio a promiscuous, foreign man?”

“That’s right, Chuck. You hit the nail right on the head there, as God is my witness. I’m sick, sick to my stomach with worry. It’s clear that we don’t have long left, and while I’m as eager to go to Heaven as anyone, be rewarded for being righteous, I can’t stomach the fact that so many didn’t listen. Why don’t they listen, Chuck? It’s all spelled out, plain as day, for those with eyes to see!”

“It is indeed. Anyway, thanks for calling, Michael, and…” Chuck let out a carefully planned chuckle. “…I hope to see you after the Rapture. But not too soon, I’d hate to miss another great season from the Wranglers.”

“Amen to that, Chuck. Amen to that.” As Michael hung up, Chuck addressed the listeners.

“Wise words from a man who could be any of you. Yes, times are strange and troubling. But here in Wyoming, we won’t let the ungodly, so-called progressives, foreigners, atheists, sinners, get a foothold. We’re a good, Godfearing, hard-working State. So, do you think that the Rapture is nigh? Michael certainly did, and he’s a man that’s been tilling these lands since his grandfather’s day, you heard him. Anyway, next caller… oh, it’s Cody, from little Saratoga. Lovely quaint town. Stopped there once, great hot springs. Good afternoon, Cody. What’s on your mind when you hear about the strange events across the Pacific?”

“Hi, Chuck. Thanks for having me. And yeah, Saratoga’s a great town. Quiet, peaceful. Anyway, I’m not sure I entirely agree with Michael.”

“Oh, how so?”

“It’s just… I think it’s a bit premature to say that all of these happenings are signs of the end of days. I watched the news, I was out-of-state at the time. I’m a long-distance trucker, you see? Was all the way over in Washington. And they were talking about it, Chuck.”

“I’ll bet they were, Cody, I’ll bet they were. They like to talk and talk, do the out-of-touch politicians.”

Cody let out a slightly nervous chuckle. “Yeah, got me there, Chuck. But still… I think it’s very worrying, you know? So much is happening abroad, and now there’s the changes in Tokyo. They say it’ll spread, don’t they? I must say, my uncle’s got a farm, he’d be overjoyed if his fields expanded and he didn’t have to pay for the land. Though he’d sure bitch and moan about the extra work harvesting crops. My old uncle’s a penny-pincher, wouldn’t pay any more farmhands.”

“Work is Godly.” Chuck agreed piously. “If everyone just worked harder, America would be a more perfect country. Too many freeloaders, who think they’re entitled to the sweat off other men’s brows, if you ask me.”

“Uh, sure. I mean, I work hard, sometimes I’m driving for forty hours out of forty-eight, you know? Me on the open road, just the radio for company.”

“And I’m glad you chose The Right Agenda to accompany you. So, you were saying you’re concerned?”

“I sure am, Chuck. Think about it. We don’t much hear about any Americans with these new powers, do we? It’s all Japan this, Japan that. Oh, some about Britain too. And then those Church people. So in Europe, I guess. Well, aren’t we getting left behind? If even the world can be expanded, and magical beings can come and go… won’t countries with these powers take our jobs, get rich while we get poorer?”

“A fair point. The rest of the world’s been taking advantage of America for far too long, so our good President says. But… let me be frank, Cody…”

“Oh, sure, of course. I always want to hear your opinion, Chuck.”

“…I think you’re naïve. Deuteronomy states… let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you.” He rattled off the passage, which he had already procured before he opened the talk show for the day, with quiet, yet intense confidence. “I don’t think we want to open America to the ungodly. That which walks and talks like us but isn’t us… they are the Devil’s creatures. And if the outside embraces them, well, the Lord will drive them out. Don’t be seduced, young Cody. Don’t listen to those telling you that this is good, or that we should live and let live. We’re the greatest, God-fearing, Jesus-loving country on Earth, and it’s our duty to keep it that way.”

“Uh… sure.” Cody stammered.

“You wouldn’t like it if they took your job, would you, Cody? Or your uncle lost his farm? It’ll happen. It’ll happen the moment we let our guards down, and let the wicked in. What joy for your uncle if his farm is twice the size, but he ends up in Hell after he dies? Think about that, Cody. Think about that.”

“Oh. I will. Thanks… I… have to go now.”

“It was a pleasure. Don’t be misled. It’s easy to listen to those who don’t have our best interests at heart, who don’t listen to the Lord. Anyway, we’ll soon have our next caller, but… Cody. I can tell he’s a good, hardworking young man, but… that’s exactly why he needs to stand strong against beguilement. The fruits of sin are tasty. Power, wicked power, it worms its way in. But here in Wyoming, in America, we’re far too strong to fall for such nonsense. The Lord is our shield, faith protects us. Don’t let our fellow men be seduced down the wrong path like Cody.”

He paused to let that sink in. “Now then, next up we have… oh, a Pastor. I daresay he has a wise opinion on such matters as what’s going on in the world right now. Pastor Jerimiah, thank you for calling.”

“No, thank you.” Jerimiah’s voice was rich and melodious, a man used to speaking. “Your words are an inspiration. And you tried to steer young Cody back to the righteous path.”

“I do my best.” Chuck preened. “So, what do you think of the current news?”

“You made one small mistake. The expansion of the world is only natural, as it reaches a more perfect state, ready to ascend to Heaven. The Rapture is indeed coming, where the souls of all the Godly shall be saved. But the Earth should be saved too, as it is a cradle God set us upon, to grow, to be tested.”

“I see. That’s an interesting viewpoint, Pastor. But what of Japan, then?”

“You have the right of it. This Akio Oshiro is not a Godly man. He consorts with false creatures, those not within God’s plan, and indeed seduces those with weak minds away from the true way. He surely has to be reviled and condemned. But those with faith should welcome Earth nearing perfection. The time is coming, and those of us alive are truly blessed for we shall see the brilliant light of Heaven in our lifetime. Or…” he paused meaningfully. “… the fiery depths of Hell.”

“Amen to that.” Chuck approved. “So, you sound a learned man, Pastor. Just what are those wicked creatures in Japan and around the world?”

“Mockeries of men. To be reviled, although… God is kind. Should they repent sincerely, they perhaps can still be saved. No, do not fear those across the seas who dabble with wickedness, for the Lord shall judge, and he shall not hesitate to empower the righteous. No, instead, we should fear the snakes within our bosom. Those who have no faith, those who worship false idols, those enraptured by the poison of sin and blasphemy. They are the true threats. Those who believe will be saved, but those who hinder the Lord and his works… Hell always has room for sinners!”

“Powerful and true words, Pastor Jerimiah. Powerful words indeed. I agree. Think of Michael, and his hardworking family. Cody’s uncle, a simple man. The callers before, and those afterwards. The men and women of your town, who you see at church every Sunday, those who pitch in to help out in a crisis, those who are justifiably afraid of the wicked who come bearing favours which cost a great deal, treachery wrapped up in kindness.”

“Indeed.” Pastor Jerimiah agreed. “You have the gift of the Lord’s wisdom, and a tongue to speak it. I have an… offer… to extend to you.”

“Oh, do tell. Though I’m not a greedy man, so don’t feel you have to donate to the station, or me.”

“Oh, it’s not that sort of gift. My mission, you see, will be coming to Cheyenne soon. And I would very much to meet you and pray with you. I think you would find it comforting.”

“I’m always eager to show my piety. After all, all we in Wyoming have is due to our hard work, and the Lord’s bounty. Sounds wonderful. Give my station a call and we’ll arrange some live coverage.”

“Magnificent. And let me say one final thing.” Pastor Jerimiah spoke solemnly. “Do not be seduced. What is happening around the world may seem fantastical, exciting, transformational… but the only truth is that the Lord is the way. Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil. Do not be led astray, off the path. For when one leaves the path, it is far too late to turn back. All that will surround you is darkness, until you see the light, and… it will be the searing flames of Hellfire!”

“Powerful words. Thank you, Pastor Jerimiah. Do call the station and I’ll spread the word. I’m sure Cheyenne’s faithful will turn out in force to raise money and do good works. We’ll not be led astray by propaganda from foreign lands. Now then… oh, we have a new caller, Susan, from Boulder. Hello, Susan. What do you think of what Pastor Jerimiah preached?”

“Good afternoon, Chuck. I’m a huge fan. First time caller, long time listener. Pastor Jerimiah was an inspiration, as you are, doing God’s work. I’m worried for our future. Here in Boulder, we’ve got those who are excited by all the depravity and sin going on over in Japan. Marriage is between one man and one woman, that’s it, so that adulterous snake…”

What was a shock, however, was that after a tempestuous unplanned speech, in which the Imperial Family argued with their own Princess Mikasa, and Akio Oshiro, the Emperor announced a dual Imperial system, against all precedent.”

Sophie paused for breath. “Of course, the old Insei system was cited, but it hardly fits the nature of what was announced. The Imperial authority would be split in two, with Prince Gorohito becoming Tenno Heika Chikyū…” She pronounced the Japanese a little clumsily. “…and having secular authority such as the Emperor possesses now, which is to say… not a great deal. Smiling at the camera professionally, she finished her headline report. “While many worldwide are watching curiously, and eagerly poring over the revealed information, and the changes in Japan cause some trepidation, other voices have spoken out. The Archbishop of Marseille has called for calm and conciliation, and for the public not to fear or persecute these Béni par Dieu, the Blessed of God, as the government has dubbed them, but has also called for them to refrain from using their new gifts for selfish gain.
