Instinctively, Lewis reached into his pocket, wanting to light a cigarette, but he paused and withdrew his hand. He looked out the window at the dark clouds in the distance.
His voice was low, as if it came from a faraway place. He continued, "How could Grandma ever forget her most beloved grandson? She even remembers Oliver... So, just as you said, she’s afraid that I can’t handle the reality of her leaving, so she’s pretending not to recognize me on purpose. She wants to make me sad and numb. Maybe that way, when she’s gone, it won’t hurt as much."
Kiera grasped the meaning of his words. She held Lewis’s hand, her eyes turning red.
