The bloodstained snow was burning. Eliza Cotton, a fourth-tier sequencer, was dead.
Silence fell over the communications room in the Leikuo building. Sid paced, glancing across the array of electronic screens. Whether the signals were clear or static-filled, every monitor displayed a losing battle.
"Liz really pulled it off this time..." Sid forced a smile.
Elizabeth and the personnel backing Red Rain continued to exceed every estimate of their strength.
The other side had too many hidden moves. The shifts on the chessboard were now impossible to predict.
The tsunami of cheers roaring from Longteng Building Square echoed into the comms room. The Metropolitan Police Department's defensive line was still falling back as the street's surging tide pushed forward. The barricades were on the verge of total collapse.
Personnel on the highest floors of the skyscraper were evacuating downward, while the lowest floors were just as chaotic, with people fleeing upward. Everyone was converging on the middle levels.
They couldn't escape into the underground parking garages now; the surrounding streets were entirely flooded by the furious mob.
Breaking out at ground level was impossible. The moment they stepped outside, they would be surrounded and swallowed whole.
