Chapter 257: The Water Is Hot
Drums thumped as a kabuki performance unfolded on the stage in the Gokuraku Club's main hall.
Several kabuki actors wore gorgeous costumes. Their faces were painted snow-white with thick circles of red drawn around their eyes, and their exaggerated expressions made their veins bulge.
The rows of audience seats below were packed, and the patrons chatting and laughing over at the bar were looking on as well.
Gu He, Lorna, Vivian, and Sakai Shukichi were watching from the audience.
One of the actors on stage was Sakai Huaqing. Her makeup was especially heavy and her costume a riot of colors. She walked with an exaggerated gait, almost stumbling as she roared, "I will no longer be manipulated by anyone!"
This was exactly the flavor they were looking for.
Long before the performance started, Sakai Shukichi had lectured them about kabuki, completely ignoring whether they actually understood it.
In the ancient times of the Old World, kabuki was supposedly created by a group of people known as kabukimono.
"Kabu" meant drawing attention through behavior and movements that defied social norms.
