Before the echo of his voice died down, a phone call came through, the very sound of a ringing phone he now feared the most but also desperately wanted to hear.
He feared it because he feared receiving bad news. But he also wanted to hear it just in case there was news about Lu Weixi, or perhaps the company’s situation had improved?
The ringing of the phone was like the grating noise of a metal scraping across porcelain. Qin Zhiyou didn’t speak, and no one else dared to answer. Perhaps he was indeed too tired after such a long time without rest, even his reactions were half a beat too slow. By the time he thought to answer it, the call had already been disconnected. He glanced at the caller ID; he recognized the area code, 001 – it was from America.
It wasn’t from the kidnapper, but it was from America. In that moment, Qin Zhiyou felt an urge to evade. He knew there were still hours before the market opened in New York, but he felt almost like he was experiencing a stress reaction upon hearing the words "America, New York," his heart racing.
He suddenly sat down on the chair, and just as he did, the door to the meeting room was pushed open. Then Secretary Wang, gasping for breath, rushed in: "Boss Qin, there’s been an incident."
Those words again, and just like before, Secretary Wang was related to both the kidnapping and work matters. The sight of him made Qin Zhiyou terribly anxious; he tried to stand up, but everything went black for a moment from lack of sleep, and he sank back down into his chair: "What happened?"
