Chapter 440: 440 The Wound is Not Deep
Chapter 440: Chapter 440 The Wound is Not Deep
For a moment, Mrs. Wu almost couldn’t breathe.
Her wounds were still bleeding, but Father Wu was doubting her.
Wu Haipeng shouted, “Enough, how old are you both? Still playing like this, do you really want to drive me to death?”
Mrs. Wu was full of guilt, “It’s my fault for you; I shouldn’t have insisted on marrying your father back then!”
Wu Haipeng yelled, “Shut up, I can’t be bothered with the past. You’ve made such a mess now. Don’t expect me to take care of Granny and those four kids for you. Even if you want to die, you must raise the four kids to adulthood. That’s your debt, not mine!”
Mrs. Wu was dumbfounded.
Father Wu also turned to look at Wu Haipeng.
“Am I wrong? Why should I pay for your foolish actions? I finally got married and you pull this on me, are you bothered because my wife is too good-natured?”
Wu Haipeng was also trembling with anger.
Dangdang was frightened.
If this is what she remembers of her wedding, with the taste of blood, who can bear it?
Most likely, she’ll feel sickened her whole life.
Wu Haipeng was shaking with anger.
Fortunately, someone had brought the doctor over by now.
The doctor carefully checked Mrs. Wu’s wound; it wasn’t deep, it only bled so much because it hit an artery. After stopping the bleeding and stitching it up, she was saved.
Wu Haipeng was covered in blood, ignoring it. His new clothes were completely ruined.
Seeing neighbors coming over, he felt quite embarrassed.
Father and Mrs. Wu clearly wouldn’t care what outsiders thought, so he had to handle the external communications.
After seeing off all the neighbors, Wu Haipeng looked at Father Wu and asked, “Dad, give me a straight answer, what exactly are you planning to do?”
Father Wu was silent.
Wu Haipeng then turned to his mother lying on the bed, “Mom, if you’ve truly broken the law, I’ll personally send you to prison!”
Mrs. Wu coughed violently, pointing at Wu Haipeng as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, she didn’t utter a word.
Father Wu reminded her, “Don’t pull a stunt like that, no one’s dying!”
Mrs. Wu’s tears continuously fell, “I’ve been married to you for so many years, devoted to this family, and you say that about me—do you have a heart?”
Father Wu coldly retorted, “And who was it for that I came back from the Northwest? I could have just stayed!”
Mrs. Wu froze.
She never thought Father Wu would push the responsibility onto her.
Back then, they were deeply in love, claiming to be revolutionary partners. How could their son be married now, yet she’s being blamed?
Mrs. Wu couldn’t fathom it, her eyes looking at Father Wu were full of existential doubt.
“Are you regretting it now? Then why don’t you acknowledge your poor old wife?”
Mrs. Wu let out a sharp scream, and Father Wu’s face changed dramatically.
Father Wu was about to raise his hand against Mrs. Wu when the door was suddenly pushed open.
Granny Gu walked in, although very frail, she took a look around, fixing her gaze on Father Wu, “Little Dog, kneel down!”
At Granny Gu’s words, Father Wu immediately knelt on the ground.
Granny Gu walked to the bed, raising her hand to slap Mrs. Wu.
Her hand, dry and gnarled like an old tree branch, left scratches across Mrs. Wu’s face, drawing blood.
Mrs. Wu clutched her face, pale, leaning against the headboard, glaring at Granny Gu with angry eyes.
“As a daughter-in-law, showing no respect to your mother-in-law, I hit you because you deserve it!”
Granny Gu, though illiterate, was wise enough in those difficult times to send her son to private school for enlightenment.
Later, she raised her daughter-in-law and grandson, proving her tenacity and resilience.
If not completely desperate, she wouldn’t have sought her son’s help.
Granny Gu came with thoughts of death, but when Tang Chuxia whispered a word in her ear, she woke up.
She couldn’t die yet.
If she died, the four kids would have a harder life.
So she had to uphold her role as a mother-in-law.
Even if Mrs. Wu wanted to oppose, as long as she didn’t divorce Father Wu, she had to take care of Granny Gu.
Granny Gu stood firm on moral high ground.
“Suicide threats—this is the city folks’ skill? You weren’t this scared when looking down on us back then!”
Granny Gu, leaning on a cane, looked frail with a hunched back but spoke with a strong voice.
“Little Dog, they say you should marry a virtuous one, what did you do? Dajuan, though older, has a conscience. What about this wife of yours? In the old days, she’d be just a concubine. Yet you neglect your legal wife for this concubine—abandoning your wife and child for a woman you want to pamper. Do you want to see me, this old woman, die to be satisfied?”
Granny Gu coughed occasionally but her words frightened Father Wu.
Father Wu knelt and hugged Granny Gu’s leg, “Mom, I was wrong, don’t be mad, I can’t live without you!”
Granny Gu was so angry she laughed.
Can’t live without her?
Yet where was this ungrateful son during her fake death?
Indeed, a good-for-nothing!
Granny Gu lacked strength to shake off Father Wu, so she waved at Wu Haipeng.
“You’re his son, pull your father off!”
Wu Haipeng grabbed Father Wu by the back collar and lifted him straight up.
Feeling humiliated, Father Wu wanted to break free but, seeing his son’s cold gaze, he gave up and stood obediently.
Granny Gu spoke to Dangdang, “Today’s supposed to be your big day, but I, this old bag, threw a wrench in it. We’ve never met, but I can see you two are good kids!”
Granny Gu’s words nearly brought Wu Haipeng and Dangdang to tears.
Even now, Granny Gu held no grudge against them.
“Granny, it was our mistake!”
Wu Haipeng said.
Granny Gu nodded, “You’re not wrong, having such parents is indeed troublesome. In the future, don’t let them take care of your kids; they’ll only spoil them!”
Father Wu: …
Mrs. Wu: …
Wu Haipeng nodded in agreement, “We’ll raise our kids ourselves!”
Granny Gu was very satisfied.
“Since you’re alive, start serving me tomorrow!” Granny Gu coughed twice, obviously very weak. Getting out of bed to deal with this took all her strength.
Mrs. Wu was tasked with serving her, unwilling but, meeting Father Wu’s cold eyes, her instinct told her that if she refused, it might mean the end of her marriage to Father Wu.
This wasn’t twenty years ago. If she divorced now, likely her family wouldn’t support her and would scorn her for ruining their reputation.
She could only agree to everything.
“Mom, taking care of you is my duty!”
Mrs. Wu’s words only earned a derisive laugh from Granny Gu.
