Samantha pushed herself from Xander, and the next thing the latter felt was another sharp pain on his cheeks. Samantha had slapped him once again.
Xander stumbled a few steps back from Samantha due to the impact. He stared at her with shock, trying to decipher the reason behind the slap. He’d thought she would give in to him since that was probably what she wanted.
"You must think you can change my mind with that kiss," she said, shocking him. "Well, I’m sorry to tell you, but it’s not going to work." Her eyes burned with defiance. "What I said stands. You have no right to dictate who I should or shouldn’t be with. If Benjamin and I hit it off, we might as well marry. I’m sick and tired of you." Every word dripped with venom, leaving no room for doubt.
She glared at him harder than she’d ever glared at him before with such hostility he never thought he would see in her eyes ever directed towards him. It was like he’d hit a sensitive spot, and now she was abandoning him.
Without waiting to hear any more words he was going to spout, she excused herself and left the room.
Xander was standing in the room, trying to register everything that had just happened.
Indeed Samantha had always been by his side since Arabella died. When Bruce had signed him up for brutal military training to become stronger, she’d been there with a water bottle every time.
He’d tried chasing her away but she never listened to him. She’d been by his side through thick and thin, and after those words she’d said and left the room, he felt he’d lost a piece of himself.
Since the death of Arabella, he’d promised himself to never fall in love, and he’d been keeping on to that promise while hurting someone whom he held close to him.
