Xavier’s gaze stayed locked on her, his expression unreadable, his silence stretching longer than she anticipated. Anastasia pressed on, her voice steady. "I’m sure Tracie has already told you most of what I do. We’re after the same enemy, Xavier. Why fight separately when we can work together to bring him down?"
The offer lingered in the charged air, each second feeling heavier than the last, thick with unspoken tension and the weight of what such an alliance could mean.
"Why should I trust you?" Xavier asked, his tone sharp and guarded. His dark eyes bore into hers, searching for any hint of deception.
Anastasia met his gaze without flinching. She understood his hesitation—it wasn’t every day someone aligned with Xander came offering an alliance. Still, she could see the wheels turning in his mind, weighing the risks. What if this woman, sitting so calmly beside him, was merely bait, waiting for the right moment to lead him into a trap?
"I’m not a bad person, Mr. Wallace—"
"Your partner shot me in the leg."
"Because you were about to shoot me. But he didn’t kill you. If he wanted to, he would have shot you in the head instead."
Xavier couldn’t argue that because it was the truth.
"Look, I don’t want anything from you. I just want to work with you to bring Xander down. He’s currently going to be working with the Regalith family, or so he thinks but it’s all part of my plan."
"Why do you want to take Xander down?" Xavier asked, his voice calm but laced with suspicion. He leaned back slightly, arms crossed, studying her every move. To him, the question might have seemed redundant, but he wasn’t about to trust someone blindly. Not without understanding their reasons.
Anastasia’s lips curled into a faint, almost bitter smile. "I want to avenge the deaths of the people who’ve suffered and died at his hands." Her voice was steady, but there was an edge to it—a restrained fire. Then she turned her head, locking eyes with him. "Is that enough reason, Mr. Wallace?"
