Chapter 671
Angelo didn’t bring up the topic of the wedding for the rest of the night, as curious as he was about the surprise, he also didn’t want to ruin it. He hoped the surprise involved Nikolai in a wedding dress.
"You’re smiling again," Nikolai pointed out, leaning back in his chair. Dinner was over and the clear skies were gradually covered up by thunderclouds. "Still thinking about me in a dress?"
The assassin beamed across the table at him, "Are my thoughts written on my face?" He asked as he rose to his feet, his tone light.
Nikolai was supposed to get up too so they could leave, but he sat for a few seconds longer, he needed to learn to better handle Angelo’s smiles, or his heart wouldn’t be able to take it.
He rose to his feet in time to take Angelo’s bag before he could, it weighed nothing, the glittering bag hiding the dangerous weapons within. He offered the assassin his arm then, the gentleness in Angelo’s eyes still lingered, it soothed the voices in his head.
Angelo did a double take at the silent gesture, taking the Mafia King’s offered hand. The skies had gotten more turbulent, lightning arcing through the thick, dark clouds, it urged the other diners to also take their leave.
There were a lot of couples like them, laughing softly together and walking arm in arm, and this time, he was no longer on the outside looking in. The wind picked up as they stepped into the parking lot, whipping Angelo’s hair around his face; a thunderstorm was coming.
Nikolai held him close until they got to the car, the Mafia King opening the door for him.
"Thank you," He appreciated, needing to push his hair out of his face as he got in.
They were barely out of the parking lot when the first drops of rain fell, the wind picked up even further, whistling as it blew past, rocking trees in its intensity. But it was warm in the car, the sound of the encroaching thunderstorm muted.
Angelo tried to fingercomb his hair which was further tousled by the wind, looking out the windshield. "Do you think we’ll make it home before it starts pouring down?"
Nikolai’s gaze trailed down the assassin’s hair scattering over his shoulders. "Scared?"
Angelo gave up on his hair then and as soon as he sat back, Nikolai’s hand immediately found its way into his hair; why did he even bother?
"Of getting wet? Yes." He quipped back.
The night got darker as the clouds rolled in, the light rain left a thin sheen of water on the road which reflected the streetlights, it was dreamlike.
The weather remained windy with light rain the entire way and soon they were pulling into the driveway. But just as the key turned off in the ignition, the rain suddenly intensified. It fell down in sheets, obscuring the view of the warmly lit manor.
Nikolai chuckled lightly, the sound nearly getting swallowed up by the pouring rain. "What do you think? Do you want to brave the rain?"
Angelo peered out through the windshield, the rain beating down so hard he could barely see the outline of the manos. Only the lights were still visible, large blobs of glowing light like dandelions in the pouring rain.
"I’ll pass." He was quick to turn down, taking off his seatbelt.
They were in no rush and the car was dry and warm, he preferred being stuck here to running through the thunderstorm only to wind up wet.
Nikolai put the car in idle, leaving the heating on. It was a cold winter storm, so running through the rain wouldn’t be fun. But that also meant that he was in an enclosed space with Angelo...
Angelo was distracted watching the rain come down, his guard down, so the hand on his jaw caught him off guard, sending shivers down his spine. He glanced over just in time to meet Nikolai’s dark blue eyes mere inches from him.
The Alpha’s scent was cool but his touch burned; the kiss was light and fleeting, a stark opposite from the thunderstorm beating down on the car.
There was little else to do while they waited for the rain to slow down so Angelo returned the kiss, sinking a hand into Nikolai’s hair. Time seemed to slow down, the kiss remained tender, it warmed them up further.
When the kiss broke away, they were both breathless, holding each other’s gaze in the dim light of the car. The rain had also slowed down enough for them to brave the journey inside.
Angelo took one look at the dangerous glint in Nikolai’s eyes and swept up his bag, hurrying into the house before the rain picked up again.
Nikolai had parked as close to the front doors as possible, but the rain had been coming down too heavily for them to even try despite the short distance.
He sat back and watched the assassin practically run from the car, a pleased smile on his face. He turned off the car and ran through the rain into the house as well.
When he got into the foyer, he found Angelo waiting for him, damp strands of his tousled black hair sticking to his face.
"You waited for me," Nikolai said in surprise, so pleased now his eyes were glowing.
Angelo took a step back, sidestepping the Mafia King who immediately started for him. "It’s cold, let’s go shower." He invited calmly, going up the steps.
He had locked Nikolai out of the bathroom before their date, but he really couldn’t keep doing that. They were already sharing a room, taking a bath with his mate was perfectly normal.
Although he calmly went up the stairs, he was anything but. His heart thudded in pace with his footsteps, their bedroom approaching far too soon.
Undoing the ties on his dress shirt was easy, he loosened the ones on his wrist first, and as he reached behind him, he bumped into an obstacle.
"Let me," Nikolai’s low voice was right at the shell of his ear, the Alpha’s hand applying gentle pressure on the nape of his neck.
