Chapter 59: Good Endings
Nick was tempted to smack Mijko the next time he saw her. There was no need to blush unless she was asking for something indecent.
All she had wanted was sausage. It was his sausage, but not his sausage. He shook her head and headed inside with a scowl.
He didn’t have many left. If she wanted one, she would have to come to the next sausage party.
Nick paused. He needed Sosora to invite everyone to the next sausage party, but she was still nowhere to be seen. He thought that she would be the first, well, second, to visit him after the ban on doing that was lifted.
But even after several hours had passed since Mijko took her leave, Sosora was still nowhere to be seen.
Nick had no way of knowing that while things had a good ending this time, Sosora was still in trouble with her tribe. She hadn’t received a punishment for anything from the tribal meeting. But she had still done something foolish that put her and the tribe at risk.
She didn’t get much of a punishment, at least not in the eyes of others or the ones doling it out.
But to Sosora, the scolding that never seemed to end was the worst punishment she could imagine. The voices of the elders who took turns scolding her grated against her ears and made them bleed.
Anytime she tried to cover her ears or fall asleep, they would poke her with a stick. It was inhumane.
By the time each elder had taken a turn telling her how irresponsible and reckless she was, they needed a water break. Sosora took that opportunity to sneak out and fly straight to the center of the forest to share the good news with Nick.
She was only a little surprised to see that she wasn’t the first to arrive. The elders had held her up for several hours, after all.
