Chapter 229: A little bit of Field Guide training never hurt no one
Kellen and Rhys entered into the room that Kellen had marched into before, and found that the new recruits were doing different exercises now. Gunther, when he spotted them, had a damn smirk on his face, and Kellen did his best not to react. The Captain, however, had a wide, shit-eating grin on his face.
He was so pleased, so happy, that he couldn’t hide it from anyone. That made Kellen embarrassed, and that only made Gunther laugh.
"Oh look who looks like the cat that got the cream? What were you two up to while Esper Woods was back here slaving away?" Kellen couldn’t make eye contact with him as Gunther scanned him. "Well, at least Kellen isn’t limping more, so good job there, Rhys." Gunther gave him a thumbs up, and Rhys grumbled.
"I wouldn’t do that to Kellen so soon. The man needs his rest. He’s healing, Gunther. I’m not that kind of a monster." Kellen jerked his head towards him, and Rhys froze.
"You aren’t a monster at all, Captain." Kellen said harshly, and Rhys chuckled.
"Of course. Whatever you say, Kellen." Still angry, mainly because he brushed him off easily, and didn’t sound like he believed him, Kellen tightened his grip on the Captain’s arms.
"Oh? Whatever I say, huh?" The energy in the room shifted. Most of the people here were new recruits, who viewed the Captain as a nearly god-like entity. They were not used to seeing their Captain bow down to another, let alone a Guide. It was awkward, and Kellen, not one who wanted to weaken his authority, grit his teeth and held himself back. "We are going to discuss this later." Kellen growled, and Rhys’ eyes shifted slightly. Dipping into the gold shade that always spelled trouble for Kellen.
"Promise?" He whispered, and Kellen slapped his bicep.
"Stop it!" He hissed, and Rhys laughed. Gunther at least, seemed pleased to see them laughing like this. Kellen had worried that the man was going to be a stick in the mud again after whoever did that to his face. He had no idea who would have done it, but the fact that Gunther hadn’t gotten it cleared up...
Well, it left a few guesses to who it could have been.
"Anyways." Kellen said, ignoring the way that Rhys’ shoulders shook as he tried to ignore him. "I need to borrow Gwen for a bit. I need her help grabbing some things from home, and with Mom and Dad being indisposed, she’ll need to do it." Gunther nodded.
