"Are you trying to use me to get rid of the ladies courting you?" Rue asked.
Elijah frowned. He should have known better.
"No," Elijah answered. "I have pure intentions. I need a day with some fun, and since Penelope is taking up Tyrion’s time, I need someone else to steal."
"Oh, so now you’re the thief? Very well. I will go along with it. Weren’t you in a hurry before?" Rue remembered.
"Yes, I need to get dressed quickly before I am late to dinner," said Elijah.
"You are not late since the duke is not home. That is why we are having treats in Lily’s room while we wait for the duke’s return. They were certain you were home, so no one noticed your absence. Oh, how dreadful," Rue said, trying her best not to laugh.
Rue walked by Elijah, needing to get the water to her friends. "Unfortunately, you have been caught by the duchess," she whispered.
Elijah turned around to find his mother coming down the stairs. She eyed him with suspicion.
With just one look, Elijah knew what was going through Alessandra’s mind.
Rue curtsied when she reached the duchess. "We were feeling parched."
"Dinner will be served in a moment. I cannot keep you waiting any longer. Inform the girls that they can proceed to come down," said Alessandra.
Alessandra looked at her sneaky son as Rue hurried off.
