Chapter 17: Mysterious death (1)
"Well, now I am convinced that Penelope doesn’t have a good heart. I was trying to speak kindly of her in case we had misunderstood her, but I was wrong. It is good I didn’t speak too kindly," Amelia said, taking a small sip of her tea afterwards.
Amelia only thought it was fair that she invited the young ladies from the earlier gathering to her home. It wasn’t fair that their day should be ruined thanks to Penelope.
"We might have our moments of being at odds, but to push someone is going too far," said Amelia.
"Did she truly push Sarah? From where I stood, it looked like Penelope’s guard had her away from the edge," said Harper Monroe.
Amelia stared at Harper, who was foolish to speak up for Penelope. "I know what I saw, but feel free to question it."
Harper bit her lip. She didn’t want to become the next target. Penelope could handle this as the daughter of the duke, but Harper could not. "Perhaps I saw something wrong. I just can’t imagine how angry you would be to push anyone."
Amelia smiled. "I understand it. I wish I could understand her actions, but I have never had so much hate in my heart. I’m sure by midnight, her father will have a lovely excuse for it. Sarah’s family might somehow leave town, or their wealth suddenly pulled from their hands."
Amelia enjoyed seeing the other women agree with her. She had the perfect opportunity to ruin Penelope and her time being courted this season.
The palace wouldn’t want a young woman who could harm another around the prince, no matter who Penelope’s father was.
