Chapter 378 - 380 The Yans
Yan Hao and Xia Jing had returned to the city, and the commotion had already started downstairs, Moreover, the noise from below could be heard from upstairs unless one was in a deep sleep.
At the Yans’ place, not only were Father Yan and Li Dongqing at home, but yesterday Yan Jiang also returned with his wife and children, and both Yan Tao and Yan Yuan were there too.
Hearing the movement downstairs, both Yan Tao and Yan Yuan went out to take a look. When it was mentioned that Yan Hao had returned, the Yans went silent.
When Yan Hao brought Xia Jing back and knocked on the door from outside, Li Dongqing said, "Don’t open the door."
Father Yan shook his head and said to Yan Yuan, "Go open the door."
Yan Yuan reluctantly went to open the door. Upon seeing Xia Jing, Yan Yuan gave her a glare. Disliking the woman who had lured her second brother away, Yan Yuan merely called "Yan Hao" before turning and leaving.
It could be said that Yan Hao’s love for Xia Jing was so strong that no one else but her would do, even to the point of causing turmoil at home and estranging himself from his family, something the Yans were very dissatisfied with.
Xia Jing forced a smile and said confidently, "Uncle, Auntie, Brother Yan, Sister-in-law Yan, little Tao, little Yuan, hello."
The Yans didn’t utter a word, and Father Yan said, "Sit down."
Yan Hao and Xia Jing sat down. Xia Jing placed two jars of pickles on the coffee table. The Yans didn’t think much of the pickles; it was an everyday condiment, available in stores and sometimes home-made, so it wasn’t anything rare.
"Dad, Mom, I want to marry Xia Jing this year. I hope you can give us your blessing," Yan Hao said.
"Blessing or not, you’re not going to marry her if we don’t?" Li Dongqing couldn’t contain her anger any longer. Seeing her son in such a struggle for a woman, she felt pain in her liver.
Father Yan said, "Enough."
Li Dongqing fell silent but was still discontent inside.
Father Yan looked at Yan Hao and Xia Jing and said, "Live your life however you want. I won’t say much else. You’re grown up, and I can’t control you. Opposition is futile as long as you don’t regret it later."
"I won’t regret it," Yan Hao immediately replied. It pained him that his family did not take a liking to the person he cherished.
Xia Jing had been silent throughout. The Yans’ attitude was clear—they disapproved of their relationship. Xia Jing couldn’t understand what she was lacking or how she was unworthy of Yan Hao. However, she wasn’t about to argue with the Yans at this moment.
"As long as you don’t regret it," Father Yan said, then he addressed Xia Jing, "Come for lunch today with your parents. Both families should meet and talk about your situation properly."
This was an agreement. Xia Jing sighed in relief; she had thought there might be another scene upon their return. Yan Hao and Xia Jing then left together.
Li Dongqing said, "Look at that. It was fine for Xia Jing to just go down and call her parents, but he had to follow close behind. Even when home, they’re still inseparable."
Sister-in-law Yan didn’t speak. She understood her mother-in-law’s thoughts all too well. The mother-in-law disliked seeing her son care too much for his wife. Even if she approved of her daughter-in-law, if Yan Jiang showed a bit more affection, her mother-in-law would still have a few words to say.
To say nothing of how Yan Hao felt about Xia Jing, it was no surprise that her mother-in-law wasn’t pleased.
Sister-in-law Yan could understand her mother-in-law’s perspective. Holding her own son, she thought about how uneasy she would feel if her grown son caused a fuss over a woman.
However, Sister-in-law Yan hadn’t expected Xia Jing to seem so different from their first meeting. Indeed, a young woman changes as she grows up. Sister-in-law Yan couldn’t help but marvel at how each daughter of the Xia family was noted for their excellence. No wonder Yan Hao couldn’t let go of Xia Jing.
Sister-in-law Yan herself was quite attractive, with proper and neat features that met Li Dongqing’s criteria for a daughter-in-law, and Yan Jiang approved of her too. Initially, Sister-in-law Yan hadn’t thought much of Xia Jing, but now she had to admit Xia Jing had grown quite beautiful, certainly more attractive than before.
When Yan Hao and Xia Jing went downstairs to invite Xia Weiguo and Li Wenjuan, they too breathed a sigh of relief. It didn’t matter to them whether they went over to the Yans’ or the Yans came to them.
So Li Wenjuan brought some food from her home to visit the Yans. Xia Chunrong was still at the power plant, Wu Manni’s parents lived next door, and after greeting Guo Yufeng and Wu Manni, Li Wenjuan headed upstairs.
However, the Xia Family’s days had gotten a lot better. The daughters who were supposed to go to the countryside did, and those who had jobs worked. Although Xia Weiguo was still idle at home, he cooked and tended a small vegetable garden. Xia Hua was still studying, so overall, the burden on the Xia Family had lightened considerably.
Nowadays, weddings didn’t require a feast, and since the registration documents of both Yan Hao and Xia Jing were at the countryside, they’d go back there to register their marriage. However, this meal served to formally acknowledge and agree to the union between the two families.
Yan Hao and Xia Jing both sighed in relief. After the meal, Xia Jing left downstairs with Xia Weiguo and Li Wenjuan.
Yan Hao thanked his parents, "Thank you, Dad and Mom."
Yan Yuan then asked, "Second Brother, what’s so great about Xia Jing that you’re so insistent on her?"
Yan Tao mocked Yan Yuan, "And your leader isn’t much to speak of either. Isn’t he a widower? Why are you so taken with him?"
"Third Brother!" Yan Yuan exclaimed, shocked that Yan Tao knew and that he had brought it up in front of everyone.
"What, you fancy your leader, isn’t he in his thirties?" This time, not only Father Yan but also Li Dongqing reacted strongly, "Didn’t you say his wife just passed away?"
"Exactly, little sister was even taking care of his wife. Now that she’s gone, are you interested?" Yan Tao’s words infuriated Yan Yuan, and at that moment Li Dongqing slapped her and grabbed her daughter’s ear, demanding a clear explanation.
"What’s there to explain? His wife isn’t around anymore. Why can’t I like him?" Yan Yuan retorted, giving up.
Li Dongqing became enraged, "I’m going to the Railway Bureau to see what kind of ill-mannered leader dares to entangle with female staff."
"Mom!" Yan Yuan cried out in panic, protesting, "Are you going to let me live? Killing me off would be better. I like him and there’s nothing wrong with that. Besides, he doesn’t even know yet."
"What does he not know? A thirty-four-year-old man, he’s been through it all. As if the thoughts on your face could be hidden. It’s so obvious, how could he not know?" Li Dongqing was now aching not just in her liver but also in her lungs. Her son’s behavior was bad enough, but her daughter’s affection was for such a man.
In the end, after much uproar from Yan Yuan, Li Dongqing decided against causing a scene at the Railway Bureau, but she ordered Yan Yuan to give up on that leader.
