Chapter 368 - 370: You get retribution first,
As soon as Old Lady Gao returned, she collapsed and was immediately taken to the hospital by Gao Guoqiang and Gao Jiazhi.
Gao Guofu and Lin Xuebi hurried over, and Lin Xuebi couldn’t help but complain to Gao Guoqiang, "Mom has been living in the town for years without issues, how did she fall ill as soon as she returned? How did you take care of mom?"
Gao Guoqiang retorted, "Why don’t you take her back to the town? Just leaving mom in the old house means you’re being filial?"
At that moment, Gao Guofu tugged at Lin Xuebi, who immediately shut her mouth, actually fearing that Gao Guoqiang would send Old Lady Gao to live with them in the town.
However, with Old Lady Gao ill, they didn’t want Zheng Xianghong to attend to her, just Lin Xuebi and Yang Hua.
Lin Xuebi was utterly depressed, and on top of that, Old Lady Gao was causing a fuss about leaving the hospital because she didn’t want to stay there; she wanted to move into Gao Guofu’s home.
So, in the end, Old Lady Gao got her wish and moved into Gao Guofu’s home, attended by Lin Xuebi and Yang Hua; the once resilient Old Lady Gao was truly frightened now.
Gao Guoqiang and Gao Jiazhi, seeing that Old Lady Gao was not in mortal danger, handed her over to Gao Guofu and went back to the production team.
Lin Xuebi was furious, with significant disdain and loathing for Old Lady Gao, who was no longer the formidable woman she once was; and this time, her return didn’t come with the same respect as before.
Deliberately, Lin Xuebi fed Old Lady Gao food akin to pig’s swill and didn’t even let her eat her fill; her attitude was also poor.
Now that Lin Xuebi’s children had made something of themselves, not to mention Gao Jianhua who had married into the family, even Gao Jianmin had his own job, and as for Gao Guihua, she had married Wang Xueyong and was now pregnant. Lin Xuebi was assertive, and even Gao Guofu obeyed her.
Although Old Lady Gao favored her granddaughter-in-law Yang Hua the most, Yang Hua didn’t like Old Lady Gao either. She even remembered the misery when Old Lady Gao had refused to let her go to the hospital to give birth.
Thus, Yang Hua seemed afraid of Lin Xuebi, daring not to treat Old Lady Gao kindly and turning a blind eye to the pitiful old lady.
Old Lady Gao’s pleas to Gao Guofu and her grandson were useless; currently, Lin Xuebi was the one in charge. Whenever Old Lady Gao started to make a fuss, Lin Xuebi would threaten to send her back.
That shut Old Lady Gao up immediately; she didn’t dare go back, afraid to live alone in the old house. She didn’t want to go to the Gao family’s home but had no choice but to stay with Gao Guofu.
Gao Guofu was indeed the son that Old Lady Gao had doted on immensely, unable to bear scolding or striking him, treating him like a treasure. Now thinking of her son and grandson’s neglect, her daughter-in-law and granddaughter-in-law’s indifference, tears streamed down Old Lady Gao’s old, murky eyes, but no one cared for her anymore.
Lin Xuebi thought that with Old Lady Gao so sick and being mistreated, she certainly wouldn’t last long, but surprisingly, Old Lady Gao endured and her condition miraculously improved.
"Old and undying," Lin Xuebi cursed under her breath, unaware that Yang Hua was right beside her, hearing every word.
Facing her mother-in-law in the presence of her daughter-in-law, Lin Xuebi never imagined she might one day be treated this way by her daughter-in-law.
Though Lin Xuebi wouldn’t kill Old Lady Gao, she definitely had harsh words for her from time to time, and serving her was utterly out of the question—she would only give her leftover food.
Lin Xuebi just hoped that one day Old Lady Gao couldn’t take it anymore and would say she wanted to return to the production team. Unfortunately, Old Lady Gao just stayed by their side, and even when Gao Guoqiang came to the town to visit, she didn’t mention wanting to go back.
Lin Xuebi, extremely agitated, hinted several times, but Old Lady Gao played dead and didn’t respond, prompting Lin Xuebi to become even more ruthless.
As soon as Gao Guoqiang left, Old Lady Gao glared hatefully at Lin Xuebi, "Aren’t you afraid I’ll go out and accuse you of being unfilial?"
"Go ahead, if you dare. See if your son and grandson listen to you. Don’t think I’m still the timid daughter-in-law who had no choice but to please you when I married into your family. I’m not Zheng Xianghong, who you bullied into silence. Old and undying, I’ve endured you for far too long; don’t think you can stay in the town and enjoy a good life. I’m telling you, in your dreams."
"You will receive your retribution," Old Lady Gao muttered, looking as though she was cursing Lin Xuebi.
Unable to hold back, Lin Xuebi pushed her, coldly sneering, "You’ll receive it first, and I am not you. Be glad I’m here. Imagine if in the production team, when you can hardly move, what do you think Zheng Xianghong would do to you? Ha, if she doesn’t starve you, I won’t believe it."
"She isn’t as vindictive as you." Despite Old Lady Gao having bullied Zheng Xianghong for many years, she knew what kind of person Zheng Xianghong was.
She also knew that she was just taking her frustrations out on Zheng Xianghong, feeling that Zheng Xianghong was an unlucky star who had doomed the Gao family.
"Ha, ha," Lin Xuebi laughed. "So you also know what kind of person Zheng Xianghong is, huh? Silly, indeed silly, if she weren’t she wouldn’t have let you bully her."
Saying this, Lin Xuebi spat at Old Lady Gao, "You’re just a bully who preys on the weak, only ever picking on the honest ones. You think you’re so strong, but aside from bullying Zheng Xianghong, who can you bully? She’s silly too, putting up with you just because you’re Gao Guoqiang’s mother. But once you can no longer walk or talk, tell me, if I send you back to the old house, won’t Zheng Xianghong take her revenge?"
Old Lady Gao wasn’t sure either. Recalling the past, she had bullied Zheng Xianghong a lot, so she didn’t dare let Zheng Xianghong attend to her, fearing both the unlucky influence and possible revenge.
But despite being ill-treated earlier by Lin Xuebi whom she had always treated well, Old Lady Gao was incredibly heartbroken, especially by her son and grandson’s indifference.
They were the sons and grandsons she had cherished for many years, and now not one of them was willing to take care of her.
When she had returned to the old house, no one came to visit her, and now back in the town, she was treated like this. Gao Guoqiang, however, came occasionally to see her.
With this thought, tears rolled down Old Lady Gao’s cheeks, unclear whether it was regret or something else.
But what she regretted most was not realizing what kind of person Lin Xuebi was before. Looking at Lin Xuebi’s hostile face now, Old Lady Gao was full of regret, her guts turning green with it.
"I won’t leave; you might as well kill me," Old Lady Gao sneered sinisterly at Lin Xuebi.
Regrettably, such a sinister-looking Old Lady Gao somewhat unnerved Lin Xuebi, who didn’t say much more and huffed as she walked away.
And behind her, Old Lady Gao slowly closed her eyes, tears streaming down her cheeks.
