Chapter 358 - 360: Scaring Away Old Lady Gao
Wang Xueyong no longer felt like going to the Guangming Production Team, his mind preoccupied solely with Liu Haihua’s pregnancy, causing him distress.
He had thought about discreetly handling the Liu Haihua situation, but it had never occurred to him that both Mrs. Liu and Liu Haiguo would find out. No matter how capable he was, it was impossible to wipe out the entire Liu family, and even if he managed to handle it covertly, the risk was too high.
Aside from being confused by Liu Haihua’s affair, Wang Xueyong was generally cautious and naturally wouldn’t engage in such high-risk activities.
However, Wang Xueyong didn’t go home, wandering around, his mind fully occupied by the Liu Haihua affair.
In the evening, with a heart full of gloom, Wang Xueyong returned home only to be greeted by the smiling faces of Mrs. Wang and Gao Guihua.
Mrs. Wang smiled and said, "Xueyong, Guihua is pregnant."
Wang Xueyong’s eyes widened—was Heaven also giving Liu Haihua a chance?
Without Wang Xueyong coming over, the days at the Gao family were still not bad. Although Old Lady Gao had returned, she could only pester Gao Guoqiang, who was sent back by Gao Guofu and Lin Xuebi. Old Lady Gao was heartbroken and now dared not trouble Zheng Xianghong, not because she was afraid of Zheng Xianghong, but because she was afraid of being cursed by Zheng.
Gao Guoqiang, a production team leader, was busy every day, and it wasn’t easy for him taking care of Old Lady Gao as well, but since she was his own mother, Zheng Xianghong, despite her heartache, could do nothing but blame Gao Guofu and Lin Xuebi for being unkind, and of course, she felt Old Lady Gao had brought it upon herself to some extent.
Gao Jiazhi also went to see Old Lady Gao every day, but she still troubled Gao Guoqiang, insisting that he dine with her daily, yet refusing to go to the Gao house or let Zheng Xianghong come to the old mansion, so now it had become usual for Gao Guoqiang to eat cafeteria meals with Old Lady Gao and also dine at the old mansion.
If Gao Guoqiang didn’t go, Old Lady Gao would sit at the door crying, sighing with grief, looking like she was about to die. There was no need for the Gao family to hear it; others would convey the message.
Now, Xia Xiao was perplexed by Old Lady Gao’s behavior—Old Lady Gao used to be fierce and dominant, known for her temper, even beating her daughter-in-law in front of the villagers. However, after returning from the city, she became weepy and desperate, like an abandoned old woman.
Can a person’s character really change so drastically, to be completely different? Xia Xiao shook her head; it was impossible unless one had a change of heart.
Seeing how tired Gao Guoqiang was every day, Xia Xiao took it upon herself to fill water bottles for him and Zheng Xianghong daily, adding some spring water, still hoping Gao Guoqiang and Zheng Xianghong would be well—they were the pillars of the family, after all.
That evening, Gao Guoqiang, after dining with Old Lady Gao at the old mansion, said, "Mom heard that Xia Xiao is pregnant and wants Xia Xiao to come and see her."
Xia Xiao paused, but said nothing, and Zheng Xianghong spoke up, "We’re not going. Mom is always rambling on, who knows what she’ll say when she sees Xia Xiao."
At this point, Zheng Xianghong felt somewhat despondent. "Guoqiang, can’t you speak to mom properly? She always sits at the door wiping away tears when it’s time for your visit, portraying a miserable scene, making it seem as though we’re unfilial."
Hearing Zheng Xianghong mention Old Lady Gao sitting at the door wiping away tears, Gao Guoqiang immediately felt a headache coming on. It’s not that he hadn’t spoken to her; he didn’t know how many times he had tried, but Old Lady Gao had never listened.
"Anyway, I won’t let Xia Xiao go," Zheng Xianghong declared.
After she said this, Xia Xiao became even quieter. If Gao Guoqiang and Zheng Xianghong agreed, Xia Xiao would definitely go to see Old Lady Gao, after all, it’d be unreasonable for a granddaughter-in-law not to visit her grandmother.
However, the Gao family was a bit more complicated, and Xia Xiao deep down did not want to meet Old Lady Gao, having a poor impression of her and feeling cold toward such a low-class fake witch.
Unfortunately, Xia Xiao was unlucky. That evening, she wanted to go to the Youth Point—only to find Old Lady Gao standing right outside her house, staring intently at her just a few steps from her door.
Xia Xiao was startled. There, dressed in black and gray, Old Lady Gao stood still, her gaze piercing and eerily fixed upon her, which was quite unnerving.
Xia Xiao really wanted to pretend she didn’t recognize Old Lady Gao. She had seen her from a distance once before, and darn her good memory.
Before she could speak, Old Lady Gao spoke first, "You are Jiaxing’s wife." After saying this, Old Lady Gao’s expressionless face scrutinized Xia Xiao, staring fixedly at her.
"Yes, grandmother," Xia Xiao managed a slight smile and responded.
"Do you recognize me?" Old Lady Gao asked.
Since she asked, Xia Xiao naturally shook her head, "I don’t recognize you, but you are an elder, so it’s not wrong to call you grandmother, is it?"
Old Lady Gao nodded and told Xia Xiao, "You look better than Jiazhi’s wife. Guoqiang told me you are three months pregnant, but with such a small behind, it won’t be easy for you."
Xia Xiao wanted to turn away and leave, her patience strained. She initially didn’t want to deal with Old Lady Gao, and hearing these words was even more irritating. What did she mean by not easy to give birth? How rude.
Old Lady Gao continued, "I don’t understand Zheng Xianghong’s taste in daughters-in-law, always choosing those with small behinds. It’s the same with Jiazhi’s wife and Jiaxing’s wife; those with small behinds tend to have daughters."
Heh, Xia Xiao sneered, "So, you can read faces?" She didn’t even feel like calling her grandmother anymore.
"I’ve lived more than half my life; of course, I can tell. Like your sister-in-law Yang Hua, she has a large behind which is good for childbirth. Her first child was a chubby boy, and last year she had another robust boy."
As soon as Old Lady Gao finished, Xia Xiao said, "She’s my cousin’s wife, not my sister-in-law." All this nonsense about big behinds having sons and small ones having daughters, was Old Lady Gao out of her mind?
"Cousin’s wife is also your sister-in-law." Old Lady Gao whispered to Xia Xiao, "However, your situation can be changed. Bring me a bundle of incense and talisman paper, and I can bless you to safely have a son."
Old Lady Gao spoke in a low voice, peppering Xia Xiao with several matters, as if the whole Guangming Production Team having sons was due to her blessings, crediting all to herself. She even claimed that Zheng Xianghong having sons after three daughters was because she couldn’t bear her own son being childless.
Xia Xiao was dumbfounded by Old Lady Gao’s logic, speechless for a long time, unable to understand whether Old Lady Gao had always been this way or had gradually become so bizarre.
So, this was why Old Lady Gao had been watching her; and it was also why she expressed the wish to meet her yesterday. If there were others who desperately wanted a son or kept having daughters without bearing a son, they might actually get fooled by Old Lady Gao.
Immediately, Xia Xiao sternly faced Old Lady Gao, holding the Red Book and reciting it from beginning to end. She also proffered some anti-feudal superstition sentiments, lecturing Old Lady Gao on every point.
In the end, Old Lady Gao just ran away. Yes, she ran, and quite briskly indeed.
