Chapter 283 - 284 Avoid
Xia Xiao chuckled twice, yet remained silent as she pondered how to deal with these people.
"Tired, huh? I’ll carry you on my back," Gao Jiaxing crouched down in front of her.
Xia Xiao was indeed exhausted, so she obediently lay on Gao Jiaxing’s back, "Brother Gao, I’m a bit tired, I want to sleep for a while."
"You sleep, I’ll call you when we reach the production team," Gao Jiaxing said.
Thus, Xia Xiao lay quietly on Gao Jiaxing’s back, slowly closed her eyes, and fell asleep, as Gao Jiaxing carried her at a gentle pace.
Suddenly, at a three-way junction on the main road, Gao Jiaxing saw Wang Xueyong, who was with two other people.
Gao Jiaxing paused, didn’t approach them, but instead avoided them.
Knowing that Wang Xueyong was looking for him, Gao Jiaxing was even less likely to travel on the main road, so after Wang Xueyong had gone some distance, Gao Jiaxing avoided him, not in a rush to return to the production team.
All the while carrying Xia Xiao, the steady breathing sounds coming from her indicated she was asleep. Recalling Xia Xiao’s recent words, a fierce light flashed in Gao Jiaxing’s eyes, curious about what Wang Xueyong was up to.
He was not in the same class as Wang Xueyong, it was only because he had repeated a year that he ended up in the same class as Wang Xueyong. They merely knew of each other’s existence but were not familiar.
If Wang Xueyong was simply trying to network, Gao Jiaxing didn’t mind; he wouldn’t be foolish enough to be used by Wang Xueyong, but he wouldn’t allow him to stir up trouble, let alone endanger the people around him.
Moreover, Wang Xueyong was mixing with Liu Haiguo’s siblings, which worsened Gao Jiaxing’s impression of him. Adding Ge Lai’s outstanding issue to the mix caused Gao Jiaxing to clench his teeth.
However, right now, Gao Jiaxing didn’t plan to meet with Liu Xueyong. Having just recently married, he would prefer not to have his mood spoiled by Wang Xueyong’s appearance.
Gao Jiaxing took Xia Xiao on a long detour and had now reached the rear mountain of Guangming Production Team. It was already evening, and the sky was darkening.
Gao Jiaxing felt tired too, and he found a spot to put Xia Xiao down.
Xia Xiao mumbled, "Brother Gao, have we arrived at the production team?"
"Not yet, we’re at the rear mountain," Gao Jiaxing replied.
"Why have we come to the rear mountain?" Xia Xiao was puzzled.
"I ran into Wang Xueyong on the road," Gao Jiaxing explained as he took a few sips of water.
"Wang Xueyong?" Xia Xiao frowned, "You ran into him? Where did you see him?"
"I saw him with two others and avoided them," Gao Jiaxing said.
Not pleased, Xia Xiao suggested, "Then let’s not go back for now. Let’s find something to eat in the mountains."
"It’ll be too dark to find our way soon," Gao Jiaxing replied.
"No problem; it’s not dark yet. And when we go back, we can make a torch. We might even have the moon and stars tonight," Xia Xiao optimistically said.
Gao Jiaxing nodded and Xia Xiao added, "Brother Gao, can you see in the dark? I remember how easily you carried me through the mountains late at night."
"I definitely can’t see as clearly as in the daytime, but I have no trouble walking at night," Gao Jiaxing said.
He continued, "When I first started training in the army, we spent three months in the mountains, day and night. Later on, we often stayed in the mountains for a month or two at a time, so my vision and hearing became particularly sharp, definitely better than the average person."
"Then we have even less to fear," Xia Xiao laughed.
Gao Jiaxing smiled and replied teasingly, "We’ll see if you’re not scared when a snake shows up."
At that, he deliberately stared at Xia Xiao’s feet, causing her to leap onto his back in fright.
Gao Jiaxing laughed, "Good reflexes."
"You’re terrible," Xia Xiao pinched him hard.
Gao Jiaxing suggested, "Let’s check the traps. The ones I dug before might still have game in them."
"No way, if there was any, someone would have taken it by now, or it would have gone bad," Xia Xiao said.
"Let’s look. If there’s nothing, I’ll find something else. I brought a gun, so we don’t have to be afraid of wild beasts," Gao Jiaxing led Xia Xiao by the hand and walked on.
Meanwhile, Wang Xueyong had inquired and found Gao Jiaxing’s home, which was also at the end of the workday. Gao Guoqiang was still in the team office, and Zheng Xianghong had come home early to cook. Upon seeing the unfamiliar Wang Xueyong, she said, "You’re looking for Jiaxing? He and his love left early today to go to the county town and haven’t come back yet."
Wang Xueyong paused and said, "To the county town, but I didn’t see them there?"
Zheng Xianghong laughed, "Who knows if they went to the provincial city or maybe visited a comrade-in-arms."
After Zheng Xianghong said this, Wang Xueyong asked, "Does Jiaxing have comrades-in-arms in the county?"
"I don’t know that. I don’t meddle in his affairs. You can come back another day. I don’t even know if the young couple will return tonight," Zheng Xianghong smiled and added, "If it weren’t getting late, I’d invite you in, but it’s nearly dark now. You should hurry back; the night roads are not easy."
With Zheng Xianghong saying as much, Wang Xueyong had no choice but to depart. He hadn’t expected to be so unlucky as not to see Gao Jiaxing.
However, Wang Xueyong wasn’t in a rush. He now knew where Gao Jiaxing lived, and he planned to have people on the lookout in the county town. Maybe he would run into Gao Jiaxing there.
Wang Xueyong was indeed interested in getting to know a platoon leader classmate.
Having not found Gao Jiaxing, Wang Xueyong didn’t linger and departed the Guangming Production Team with his companions.
Meanwhile, in the rear mountains, Gao Jiaxing and Xia Xiao were squatting beside a stream, using knives to whittle wooden forks to catch fish.
Xia Xiao did it on purpose. She poured water from her bottle into a stream gully near a rock, attracting quite a few fish. Without tools, catching fish was difficult. Once Gao Jiaxing caught one by hand, he instantly started to whittle wooden spears for fishing.
After spearing several fish, Xia Xiao began to smile, "Brother Gao, with those skills you have, if you weren’t a soldier, you’d be a master fisherman."
Gao Jiaxing raised his eyebrows proudly, "My sister-in-law’s family lives in a fishing village. I used to go to the sea to catch or fish all the time, and she frequently invited me over to their place."
Xia Xiao nodded, as she had encountered Gao Jiaxing bringing fish back once. Now, she watched him skillfully kill the fish by the stream as she started a fire.
